	abstract = {This paper focuses on contributions of users in early phases of radical innovation projects. In a 
multiple case study analysis in the field of medical equipment technology, we identify 
characteristics of users who contribute substantially to the development of radical innovations 
by being their inventors and (co)-developers. These innovative users have high motivation to 
seek new solutions, possess a diverse set of competencies, and are embedded in a supportive 
environment. We furthermore observe that they play an entrepreneurial role as they establish 
and organize the required innovation networks. These innovation networks are needed to 
transform the users’ radically new concepts into first physical prototypes and marketable 
products. The study highlights how manufacturing firms can benefit from innovative and 
entrepreneurial users in the early phases of radical innovation projects.

	abstract = {Die Beiträge der Neuen Institutionenökonomik zum Innovationsmanagement werden anhand zweier spezifischer Diskussionen analysiert. Die Diskussion über die Gestaltung von Intellectual Property-Rights (IPR) hat sich über den klassischen Trade-off zwischen Erfinderanreizen und Verbreitungsnutzen längst hinaus bewegt. Unter den Bedingungen sequentieller Innovationsprozesse sowie bei kumulativen Systemtechnologien können IPR zu Marktversagen führen. Die so in den Vordergrund tretenden Transaktionskosten auf Märkten für Technologien lenken die Betrachtung auf die Marktakteure selbst und deren Strategien, sich Erträge aus Innovationen anzueignen. Ausgehend von den klassischen direkten Aneignungsmechanismen führt diese zweite Diskussion bis zu den merkwürdigen Umwegen, die „Kleinerfinder“ in Open Source-Projekten einsetzen, um Nutzen aus ihren Erfindungen zu ziehen.},

The Lead User method aids companies in capitalizing on the innovative potential of these highly qualified customers. A case study with the German firm, Johnson {\&} Johnson Medical GmbH, demonstrated that Breakthrough Innovations are achievable this way.},

	abstract = {To explore the role of users in radical innovation projects this study focuses on the question whether users are able to actively contribute to the development of radical innovations and which user characteristics are critical hereby. A multiple case study analysis was conducted in the field of medical technology. Five radical innovation projects were selected including medical robots and computerassisted navigation systems.
The case studies reveal that users with a unique set of characteristics can play a dominant role in the innovation process of radical innovation. These users have a high motivation toward new solutions, possess diverse competencies and are embedded into a very supportive context. Manufacturers that took over the ideas and prototypes of the inventive users benefited significantly. Based on the
empirical findings the recommendation for manufacturers is to systematically leverage specific users for the development of radical innovation.},
