In a multiple case study analysis in the field of medical equipment technology, we identify characteristics of users who contribute substantially to the development of radical innovations by being their inventors and (co)-developers. These innovative users have high motivation to seek new solutions, possess a diverse set of competencies, and are embedded in a supportive environment. We furthermore observe that they play an entrepreneurial role as they establish and organize the required innovation networks. These innovation networks are needed to transform the users’ radically new concepts into first physical prototypes and marketable products. The study highlights how manufacturing firms can benefit from innovative and entrepreneurial users in the early phases of radical innovation projects. }, keywords = {CIC innovation open radical } } @article{Gemunden.2006, title = {Formale und informale Determinanten des Innovationserfolges: Eine kritische Analyse des Zusamenspiels der Kräfte am Beispiel der Innovatorenrollen}, author = {Hans Georg Gemünden and Katharina Hölzle and Christopher Lettl}, journal = {Zeitschrift für betriebswirtschaftliche Forschung}, number = {special issue 54}, pages = {110-132}, volume = {58}, year = {2006}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2168a96baa6a5b8e3e320f96528d41368/acbullinger}, abstract = {Die Beiträge der Neuen Institutionenökonomik zum Innovationsmanagement werden anhand zweier spezifischer Diskussionen analysiert. Due to their focus on what is currently on offer in the marketplace, customers primarily demand small, step-wise developments - so-called incremental innovations. This dilemma can be overcome through with the help of particularly advanced customers (Lead Users). The Lead User method aids companies in capitalizing on the innovative potential of these highly qualified customers. A multiple case study analysis was conducted in the field of medical technology. Five radical innovation projects were selected including medical robots and computerassisted navigation systems. The case studies reveal that users with a unique set of characteristics can play a dominant role in the innovation process of radical innovation.
