@inproceedings{Cosley:2007:SUI:1216295.1216309, abstract = {Member-maintained communities ask their users to perform tasks the community needs. From Slashdot, to IMDb, to Wikipedia, groups with diverse interests create community-maintained artifacts of lasting value (CALV) that support the group's main purpose and provide value to others. Said communities don't help members find work to do, or do so without regard to individual preferences, such as Slashdot assigning meta-moderation randomly. Yet social science theory suggests that reducing the cost and increasing the personal value of contribution would motivate members to participate more.We present SuggestBot, software that performs intelligent task routing (matching people with tasks) in Wikipedia. SuggestBot uses broadly applicable strategies of text analysis, collaborative filtering, and hyperlink following to recommend tasks. SuggestBot's intelligent task routing increases the number of edits by roughly four times compared to suggesting random articles. Our contributions are: 1) demonstrating the value of intelligent task routing in a real deployment; 2) showing how to do intelligent task routing; and 3) sharing our experience of deploying a tool in Wikipedia, which offered both challenges and opportunities for research.}, acmid = {1216309}, added-at = {2011-10-28T15:26:50.000+0200}, address = {New York, NY, USA}, author = {Cosley, Dan and Frankowski, Dan and Terveen, Loren and Riedl, John}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2363c25303271d44db22090a5dbf78f83/mstrohm}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 12th international conference on Intelligent user interfaces}, description = {SuggestBot}, doi = {10.1145/1216295.1216309}, interhash = {e0411f4b0f0db2cc694f04453673e4e8}, intrahash = {363c25303271d44db22090a5dbf78f83}, isbn = {1-59593-481-2}, keywords = {TOREAD knowledge-production wikis}, location = {Honolulu, Hawaii, USA}, numpages = {10}, pages = {32--41}, publisher = {ACM}, series = {IUI '07}, timestamp = {2011-10-28T15:26:50.000+0200}, title = {SuggestBot: using intelligent task routing to help people find work in wikipedia}, url = {http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1216295.1216309}, year = 2007 } @article{medin1997categorization, added-at = {2011-08-17T23:13:30.000+0200}, author = {Medin, D.L. and Lynch, E.B. and Coley, J.D. and Atran, S. and others}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/21e1c290528408361fe45d6fb6842adaf/mstrohm}, description = {recommended by P. When each node has full knowledge of the global network connectivity, finding short communication paths is merely a matter of distributed computation. However, in many real networks nodes communicate efficiently even without such global intelligence. Here we show that the peculiar structural characteristics of many complex networks support efficient communication without global knowledge. We also describe a general mechanism that explains this connection between network structure and function. This mechanism relies on the presence of a metric space hidden behind an observable network. Our findings suggest that real networks in nature have underlying metric spaces that remain undiscovered. Their discovery would have practical applications ranging from routing in the Internet and searching social networks, to studying information flows in neural, gene regulatory networks, or signaling pathways. }, added-at = {2010-10-30T11:59:24.000+0200}, author = {Boguna, Marian and Krioukov, Dmitri and kc claffy}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2c7903397a9cd1510b5dd1ed3b13859c5/mstrohm}, description = {[0709.0303] Navigability of Complex Networks}, interhash = {5e5bf4aba8adf4ae8cd065419c820ecf}, intrahash = {c7903397a9cd1510b5dd1ed3b13859c5}, journal = {Nature}, keywords = {MUSTREAD networks theory}, note = {cite arxiv:0709.0303 }, timestamp = {2010-10-30T11:59:24.000+0200}, title = {Navigability of Complex Networks}, url = {http://arxiv.org/abs/0709.0303}, year = 2007 } @book{easley2010, added-at = {2010-06-25T12:09:08.000+0200}, author = {Easley, D. and Kleinberg, J.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/29b041bdba459fdc749a0b13de3d343d3/mstrohm}, interhash = {b1ca906b5669562496078002fed0ca42}, intrahash = {9b041bdba459fdc749a0b13de3d343d3}, keywords = {algorithms books networks}, publisher = {Cambridge University Press}, timestamp = {2010-06-25T12:09:08.000+0200}, title = {{Networks, Crowds, and Markets: Reasoning About a Highly Connected World}}, url = {http://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/kleinber/networks-book/}, year = 2010 } @article{alkhalifa2006, added-at = {2010-05-08T14:16:53.000+0200}, author = {Al-Khalifa, H.S. and Davis, H.C.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/29356c1e2db92c2198c326c0b31bbbcbe/mstrohm}, interhash = {9097702cbd5420c4d190fc572514919d}, intrahash = {9356c1e2db92c2198c326c0b31bbbcbe}, journal = {Innovations in Information Technology}, keywords = {MUSTREAD folksonomies motivation value}, pages = {1--5}, timestamp = {2010-05-08T14:16:53.000+0200}, title = {{Measuring the semantic value of folksonomies}}, year = 2006 } @inproceedings{hall2007, added-at = {2010-05-01T05:47:02.000+0200}, address = {New York, NY, USA}, author = {Hall, Wendy}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2906028140344bee66413044499fa2dd6/mstrohm}, booktitle = {HT '07: Proceedings of the eighteenth conference on Hypertext and hypermedia}, description = {Back to the future with hypertext}, doi = {10.1145/1286240.1286293}, interhash = {b0d55e36f00bb1b0f453c306b60ae0f7}, intrahash = {906028140344bee66413044499fa2dd6}, isbn = {978-1-59593-820-6}, keywords = {MUSTREAD historical web-science}, location = {Manchester, UK}, pages = {179--180}, publisher = {ACM}, timestamp = {2010-05-01T05:47:02.000+0200}, title = {Back to the future with hypertext: a tale of two or three conferences}, url = {http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1286293&dl=GUIDE&coll=GUIDE&CFID=88607930&CFTOKEN=98788996}, year = 2007 } @inproceedings{hogan2010, added-at = {2010-04-27T17:23:00.000+0200}, author = {Hogan, A. and Harth, A. and Passant, A. and Decker, S. and Polleres, A.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2df6c80018948cb19e0bb02c6b77843bd/mstrohm}, booktitle = {Linked Data on the Web Workshop (LDOW2010) at WWW'2010}, description = {analysis of the LODC based on a sample of the LODC}, interhash = {6a5a1ba466151b7b9e881d852a953349}, intrahash = {df6c80018948cb19e0bb02c6b77843bd}, keywords = {navigability semantic}, timestamp = {2010-04-27T17:23:00.000+0200}, title = {{Weaving the Pedantic Web}}, url = {http://scholar.google.com/scholar.bib?q=info:JIuMLDzUdo8J:scholar.google.com/&output=citation&hl=en&as_sdt=40000000000&ct=citation&cd=0}, year = 2010 } @inproceedings{strohmaier2010wisdom, added-at = {2010-04-19T19:11:25.000+0200}, author = {Wagner, C. and Strohmaier, M.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/22f96232a648d4fd1617c389d899f3d2b/mstrohm}, booktitle = {Proc. of the Semantic Search 2010 Workshop (SemSearch2010)}, description = {On taxonomies, folksonomies, and tweetonomies « Intentialicious: Markus Strohmaier's Weblog}, interhash = {02c222a4f9abd5964ea61af034769af4}, intrahash = {2f96232a648d4fd1617c389d899f3d2b}, keywords = {folksonomy myown networks social tagging twitter taggingsurvey}, location = {Raleigh, NC, USA}, month = {april}, timestamp = {2010-04-19T19:11:25.000+0200}, title = {The Wisdom in Tweetonomies: Acquiring Latent Conceptual Structures from Social Awareness Streams}, url = {http://mstrohm.wordpress.com/2010/04/17/on-taxonomies-folksonomies-and-tweetonomies/}, year = 2010 } @inproceedings{koerner2010a, added-at = {2010-03-28T12:48:20.000+0200}, address = {Toronto, Canada}, author = {Koerner, C. and Kern, R. and Grahsl, H. However, inferring hierarchical relations between concepts from tags has a drawback in that it is difficult to distinguish between more popular and more general concepts. Instead of tags we propose to use user-specified relations for learning folksonomy. We explore two statistical frameworks for aggregating many shallow individual hierarchies, expressed through the collection/set relations on the social photosharing site Flickr, into a common deeper folksonomy that reflects how a community organizes knowledge. Our approach addresses a number of challenges that arise while aggregating information from diverse users, namely noisy vocabulary, and variations in the granularity level of the concepts expressed. Our second contribution is a method for automatically evaluating learned folksonomy by comparing it to a reference taxonomy, e.g., the Web directory created by the Open Directory Project. It is shown how this heuristic may be used to explore different possible trade-offs between diversity and other aspects of interest, including portfolio interactions.
