A number of questions remain unanswered, however, regarding the nature of collaborative tagging systems including whether coherent categorization schemes can emerge from unsupervised tagging by users. This paper uses data from the social bookmarking site del.icio.us to examine the dynamics of collaborative tagging systems. In particular, we examine whether the distribution of the frequency of use of tags for "popular" sites with a long history (many tags and many users) can be described by a power law distribution, often characteristic of what are considered complex systems. We produce a generative model of collaborative tagging in order to understand the basic dynamics behind tagging, including how a power law distribution of tags could arise. We empirically examine the tagging history of sites in order to determine how this distribution arises over time and to determine the patterns prior to a stable distribution. Lastly, by focusing on the high-frequency tags of a site where the distribution of tags is a stabilized power law, we show how tag co-occurrence networks for a sample domain of tags can be used to analyze the meaning of particular tags given their relationship to other tags.}, added-at = {2008-11-12T15:37:38.000+0100}, author = {Shepherd, Hana and Halpin, Harry}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2add114f1d2f3bc3a7644e56af7cc89cb/zoka}, interhash = {f6beea3a70788655cc8733300dfb3c2e}, intrahash = {add114f1d2f3bc3a7644e56af7cc89cb}, journal = {Proceedings of the 16thConference on World Wide Web}, keywords = {collaborative_tagging power_law wismasys0809}, pages = {211-220}, timestamp = {2008-11-12T15:37:38.000+0100}, title = {The complex dynamics of collaborative tagging}, url = {http://www2007.org/papers/paper635.pdf}, year = 2007 } @article{Choksy-8-2006, added-at = {2008-11-12T15:35:19.000+0100}, author = {Choksy, C.E.B.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2a35d5557071e4313104ff000f9b9ae17/zoka}, interhash = {caabe201ff5a21a13e6c0925464de738}, intrahash = {a35d5557071e4313104ff000f9b9ae17}, journal = {Information Management Journal}, keywords = {development taxonomy wismasys0809}, number = 6, pages = {30-41}, timestamp = {2008-11-12T15:35:19.000+0100}, title = {8 Steps to develop a taxonomy}, volume = 40, year = 2006 } @techreport{Gastmeyer-Thesaurus-1994, added-at = {2008-11-12T15:34:37.000+0100}, author = {Gastmeyer, M.}, biburl = {http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/20326f5fa0332f05b0b37649b0d315422/zoka}, interhash = {4020327a93008488890b4068e2372fb6}, intrahash = {0326f5fa0332f05b0b37649b0d315422}, journal = {Aktuelle Fachinformation}, keywords = {Thesaurus_ Wirtschaft thesaurus wismasys0809}, timestamp = {2008-11-12T15:34:37.000+0100}, title = {Thesaurus Wirtschaft. It establishes the ability to ask the questions one needs to ask as the foundation of performance evaluation, and recall and discrimination as the basic quantitative performance measures for binary noninteractive retrieval systems. It then defines the characteristics of indexing that affect retrieval-namely, indexing devices, viewpoint-based and importance-based indexing exhaustivity, indexing specificity, indexing correctness, and indexing consistency ― and examines in detail their effects on retrieval. Different index types, varying from content-based keywords to structured task-based indexing ontologies, are compared in an experiment that simulates the task of creating instructional material from a database of source material. To be able to judge the added value of task- and ontology-related indexes, traditional information retrieval performance measures are extended with new measures reflecting the quality of the material produced with the retrieved information. Instead of trying to understand or build brains from the bottom up, its goal is to understand and build intelligent behavior from the top down, putting the focus on what an agent needs to know in order to behave intelligently, how this knowledge can be represented symbolically, and how automated reasoning procedures can make this knowledge available as needed. This landmark text takes the central concepts of knowledge representation developed over the last 50 years and illustrates them in a lucid and compelling way. Each of the various styles of representation is presented in a simple and intuitive form, and the basics of reasoning with that representation are explained in detail. This approach gives readers a solid foundation for understanding the more advanced work found in the research literature.
