Abstract
The presented study comprises the results of the project Ambient Intelligence in Medical Environments and Devices (AIMED). Within this research project – funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Berlin Senate – we analysed and evaluated the potential benefits and weaknesses of Ambient Intelligence in the field of process support in hospitals. By the use of semi-structured, problem-focused interviews in three different clinics of surgery we investigated the status quo of the use of ambient technologies as well as new application areas for ambient process support. Besides, it is important to focus on the corresponding acceptance problems which could affect the adoption of such technologies in health care. Based on our findings we developed a catalogue of different application areas in which we compare the identified risks with the benefits. This catalogue can be used as basis for implementation decisions of ambient systems.
