Abstract

HYPOSAT is a program package developed to locate seismic sources. It utilizes travel-time data, backazimuth (i.e., station-to-event azimuth) values, and ray-parameter values. Phases considered are those included in IASP91-type tables, and reflections from the Conrad and from the Mohorovicić discontinuities, if local models are used. The program follows the phase name recommendations of the IASPEI Working Group on Standard Phase Names (see IS 2.1). Additionally, all possible travel-time differences between different onsets at individ-ual stations are estimated and can be included in the location process (e.g., PcP-P as an addi-tional constraint for the source depth). If amplitude and period measurements for P onsets or surface waves are available, station magnitudes and an event magnitude can also be estimated. More details about the general features of the program can be found in Schweitzer (1997, 2001).
