Abstract
this paper we explore a new theory of discourse structure that stresses the role of purpose and
processing in discourse. In this theory, discourse structure is composed of three separate but interrelated
components: the structure of the sequence of utterances (called the linguistic structure), a struclure
of purposes (called the intentional structure), and the state of focus of attention (called the
attentional state). The linguistic structure consists of segments of the discourse into which...
This is a really dense paper on a model of discourse structure, that seems more robust than the RST (Mann99Introduction) for example. The model is more generic as it is based on three layers composing the discourse:

1- the linguistic structure,

2- the intentional structure,

3- the attentional structure,

1- the linguistic structure divide the discourse in basic utterances, aggregated in segments.

2- the intentional structure associate a purpose to the discourse (DP) but also to each segment (DSP). Satisfaction of the DP intention is the main purpose of a discourse, Satisfaction of a DSP intention is a step in the satisfaction of the DP.

3- the attentional structure of a discourse is modelled by focus spaces that are associated with each discourse segments. Focus spaces are organised in a stack and lower spaces can refer to information in higher spaces (in the stack) even if they are less salient in that segment.

Such model could be used in discourse generation by providing information on the user state of mind and would help planning.
