La investigación se ha abordado, en su conjunto, a partir de una perspectiva metodológica cuantitativa-cualitativa, aunque por su extensión el estudio aquí presentado recoge la parte cualitativa, desarrollada a través del análisis de contenido de una pregunta abierta del cuestionario, en el que participaron 1297 sujetos, y de la entrevista realizada a 37 personas. Como resultados principales destacar que para utilizar las herramientas digitales son necesarias competencias mediales de tipo genérico y de especialización virtual, en función del dispositivo o aplicación. Las competencias de carácter comunicativo, social y actitudinal son las más demandadas por los participantes y con menor preponderancia se refieren a la capacidad de iniciativa propia. ABSTRACT This article deals with the perception that citizens have on the competences that they must develop for the use of digital tools in the work, communication and leisure environments. This research has been developed from a quantitative-qualitative perspective. Due to limitations in the compulsory article length, we develop here the qualitative approach through analysis of content of an open question of the questionnaire, in which 1297 people participated, and of also of the interview answered by 37 persons. As main results, we could emphasize that, in order to develop digital tools, basic, generic and virtual specialization competences are needed, according to the device or the application. The competences of a communicative, social and actitudinal character are the most demanded by the participants and those competences with less relevance have to do with issues related to the ability linked with the self initiative.
