Abstract: Semantic Web technology facilitates large-scale integration and sharing of distributed data sources. Transferring this technology from the lab environment into the real world requires careful planning to ensure the technology continues to offer a cost-effective and practical service. The authors describe an approach for promoting Semantic Web technology to industrial and government organizations. They present two Semantic Web applications: one involving several parts of government and the public sector, and the other targeting the aviation industry. Their goal is to show these organizations how to practically and relatively cheaply adopt Semantic Web technology for the dissemination, sharing, and use of their data. The applications demonstrate examples of immediate benefit. This article is part of a special issue called Semantic Web Update.
