Abstract

The Avengers combined pop art, fashion, tradition, modernity, high Englishness, feminism, espionage, the Cold War, empire, sadism, fetishism and the fun of commodity. It was satirical, commercial, and self-parodic: censured by the U.S. Congress for violence and banned in the U.K., at one point, for electoral interference. Toby Miller focuses on the texts of the series, their broadcast contexts, and their subsequent reception and interpretation. He probes the keys themes of the series--pop, fashion, sex, and the postmodern--and the stories of the fans. And, overall, teases out just what made the series so much fun.
