Abstract

This paper explores the value of adaptive navigation support on student work with parameterized questions in the domain of object-oriented programming. We present QuizJET system, which is able to generate and assess parameterized Java programming questions and JavaGuide system, which provides adaptive navigation support to QuizJET questions. We also report the results of classroom studies, which compared the impact of these systems. The results of the studies indicate that adaptive navigation support encourages students use parameterized questions more extensively and also significantly increase Success Rate with these questions. Students are 2.5 times more likely to answer a quiz correctly with adaptive navigation support than without such support. In addition, we found that with adaptive navigation support, both strong and weak students achieved close to the same scores on each complexity level of quizzes. However, without such support, there was a greater gap between strong and weak students.
