For dialog systems with frame-based representations, we present a single, well-formalized operation, called overlay that computes the maximally compatible combination of new information and old information. In this combination, preference is always given to new information. In the strict de nition of overlay, all compatible information from the background is integrated into the result. However, with a generalized de nition of overlay, partial information from the background can be left out. An implementation of overlay is used in the SmartKom system as an embedded part of a discourse modeler.
