Abstract

The article in this german reader describes well some of the myths about globalization. Yes: now we have fast communication on a global level and there is a counterfeight between individuals from each continent, and we feel a clash of cultures. But it is not as simple as Ämericanization" or an "Environmental Collaps" or the "Sole Power of Industry". Globalization is a very complex process, where each dimension requires proper understanding and global control mechanisms. Finally, we need a new culture of politics, which treats globalisation in a more networked manner. Also other articles in the reader edited by Ulrich Beck are worth reading such as the article of Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Russell Hochschild about the "Women Perspective of Globalisation": Millions of mainly asian women are commuting to the first world, to serve in families to care on childs or elderly. At home, their kids see their mother twice a year for just a few weeks...
