In any case of doubt a full ophthalmological and orthoptic examination is essential and is best carried out in the congenial environs of a District Handicap Centre. Eight hundred and ninety-three children with a wide variety of handicaps were seen at the Leeds Regional Child Assessment Centre between 1972 and 1977, and 324 were found to have a visual or visuomotor defect. The types of defects are discussed under headings which describe the main handicap.
