The paper discusses the concept of 'reality-tolerance' within a dynamic positioning system for ships. It defines reality tolerance as an extension of fault tolerance. Two examples are highlighted. The first is the detection of excessive noise on position measurements used by the DP system. The second highlights practical problems associated with the allocation of thrust to the available thrusters.
