Semiconductivity in pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite phases

F. Hulliger, and E. Mooser. J. Phys. Chem. Solids 26(2):429 - 433 (1965)

Over the past two years the synthesis in our laboratory of a number of new pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite phases has been reported. In the present article these results are systematically summarized and the crystal chemistry of the compounds as well as some of their electrical and magnetic properties are interpreted in terms of a simple model in which the cation d electrons are assumed to be essentially localized. The electronic configurations on the cation are classified as ‘high spin’ and ‘low spin’ according to whether crystal field effects or Hund's rule dominates in the determination of the ground state.
