Abstract

Nowadays, the topic lightweight design plays in the most engineering tasks an important role. A wide range of lightweight design concepts complicate the daily life of design engineers to identify an optimal lightweight design strategy for their challenging task. Usually, the identification of high lightweight design potential of structures is mostly performed in an intuitive manner or by choosing heavy structures in the context of an overall system design. Currently, an engineering tool is missing that shows to design engineers the lightweight design potential of existing structures. This would help in further development progress to focus the engineering resources to these chosen parts. The approach shown in this work called AutoSysLite (Automatic System Lightweight design) represents a further development of an already existing approach for identification of the lightweight design potential which is limited on analyzing the potential of fiber-reinforced composites in the automotive sector. The analyses performed in this work, provide unused potential for the support of the design engineer in the field of lightweight design. This potential is demonstrated on academic models using ABAQUS and MATLAB as software tools.
