Abstract

TOCRoSS (Table Of Contents by Really Simple Syndication) (http: //www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=project_tocross) is a Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) funded project to develop a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) news feed service which automatically transfers publisher and electronic periodical (e-periodical) information directly into library online catalogues. The RSS 2.0 standard is used to place periodical tables of content (TOC) data into the library catalogue without human intervention, thus improving the accuracy of records, saving time for library administrators and adding value for library users. The project will build on the work that has already been done formulating the ONIX Serial Release Notice (SRN) format and the Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata (PRISM) standards. The objectives of the project are to: extend the RSS 2.0 standard to encompass relevant components of standards such as ONIX and Prism, and publish the resultant document in the public domain; use the extended RSS standard to provide a greater level of automation of interoperability between the publisher and a library through the integrated library system (ILS); deliver open source software components and Extensible Markup Language (XML) schemas, which will be freely available for the whole of the FE/HE library, publisher and ILS supplier communities; produce a demonstration implementation of a service utilising the standards and software as part of the project; and report on the impact of this project for an academic institution. The project was led by Emerald Group Publishing Ltd and Emerald's head of Web services, Paul Evans, is TOCRoSS project manager. The other partners are TALIS Information Ltd and Derby University, UK. When the project is complete, the software will be published via sourceforge (http: //sourceforge.net/), where a TOCRoSS project will be set up. (Quotes from original text)
