Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) represent an important class of educational technology poised to play particularly critical role helping learners acquire the skills needed to succeed. This paper argues why this is the case, describes existing ITS technologies and functionalities, summarizes current research streams, and highlights underrepresented areas of research that (in the author’s opinion) will be essential to the training and education of the Soldiers and leaders of tomorrow.
