Abstract

A lot of companies cause negative external effects through their activities. Social Entrepreneurship however, shows that it is possible to avoid social costs and be exclusively beneficial to society. Social Entrepreneurs strive towards solving a specific social or ecological problem instead of seeking profit only. The Grameen Bank in Bangladesh which gives micro loans to the poor is a very good example for Social Entrepreneurship. Grameen Bank's founder Muhammad Yunus got the Nobel Peace Price in 2006 for his efforts. Yunus' concept of Social Entrepreneurship is called Social Business and implies that investors capital is paid back without any interest and that no dividends are paid by Social Business Enterprises. Thus, Social Business Entrepreneurs are not governed by the same economic constraints which traditional businesses face. Cooperating with profit-orientated companies, Social Entrepreneurs influence the economic system's consciousness so that traditional business entrepreneurs might become more socially orientated. As the economic system is the dominant subsystem in society, this could also lead to a more socially orientated consciousness in the other subsystems. In conclusion, Social Entrepreneurship plays an important role towards the ideal of a degrowth economy.
