Abstract

Equations for calculating the saturation pressure and temperature of a homogeneous phase are developed using the tangent plane criterion for stability. Two new Newton formulations and the quasi-Newton successive substitution (QNSS) method are used to solve the equations, and their convergence is compared with a published Newton's approach. A robust initialization scheme is proposed that leads to convergence to all saturation pressures (or temperatures) at a specified temperature (or pressure). It is also observed that trivial solutions correspond to pressures or temperatures on the stability limit. The equations describing the cricondenbar and cricondentherm in terms of the distance from the Gibbs free energy surface to a tangent plane are also derived. A simple scheme for solving these equations is proposed.
