Abstract

This study analyzes the panel attrition between the first and the second telephone interview of the German National Educational Panel Study startig cohort 5. The study design is based on the distinction between non-response due to non-availability and non-response due to refusal. For both sources of unit non-response we consider four groups of potential influence: respondent characteristics, survey design features, organizational efforts and survey experience from the previous wave. Our findings support the general approach to distinctly analyze non-availability and refusal. For some rarely reported influces on non-response such as topic of the survey or personal success of the respondent we find significant effects on non-availability and/or refusal.
