Abstract

This paper describes management simulation games used to teach aspects of construction management. Examples of work carried out at Curtin University of Technology, Australia using one of the games is contrasted with a teaching module developed at Nottingham University aiming to use the games as the sole method of instruction. Design of the teaching module is detailed along with the software developed to support the teaching, a tool for managing the games and a game variant created to test the degree to which the students are learning the teaching material rather than simply to play the game. Quantitative and qualitative feedback from the work in the UK and Australia is given and conclusions are drawn on the usefulness of games and simulations for the teaching of this type of material.
