Traditionally, HCI has taken place within a constrained and well-understood domain of experience&amp;mdash;single users sitting at desks and interacting with conventionally-designed computers employing screens, keyboards and mice for interaction. New opportunities have engendered considerable interest in &amp;ldquo;context-aware computing&amp;rdquo;&amp;mdash;computational systems that can sense and respond to aspects of the settings in which they are used. However, considerable confusion surrounds the notion of &amp;ldquo;context&amp;rdquo;&amp;mdash;what it means, what it includes and what role it plays in interactive systems. This paper suggests that the representational stance implied by conventional interpretations of &amp;ldquo;context&amp;rdquo; misinterprets the role of context in everyday human activity, and proposes an alternative model that suggests different directions for design.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1617-4909" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="970985" swrc:key="acmid"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1" swrc:key="issue"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="12" swrc:key="numpages"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/s00779-003-0253-8" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Paul Dourish"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication></item><item rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2c47affdc102b514d3f90285a1fd71b6f/dblp"><title>Organizational routines, innovation, and flexibility: The application of narrative networks to dynamic workflow.</title><link>http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2c47affdc102b514d3f90285a1fd71b6f/dblp</link><dc:creator>dblp</dc:creator><dc:date>2011-07-12T00:00:00+02:00</dc:date><dc:subject>dblp </dc:subject><content:encoded>&lt;span class=&#034;authorEditorList&#034;&gt;&lt;a href=&#034;/author/Hayes&#034;&gt;Gillian R.
