Our approach is ontology-driven, in the sense that the construction of the knowledge model is carried out in a top-down fashion, by populating a given ontology, rather than in a bottom-up fashion, by annotating a particular document. In the paper we give an overview of the approach and we examine the various types of issues (e.g., modelling, organizational and user interface issues) which need to be tackled to effectively deploy our approach in the workplace. In addition we also discuss a number of technologies we have developed to support ontology-driven document enrichment and we illustrate our ideas in the domains of electronic news publishing, scholarly discourse and medical guidelines. In this paper, we describe how ontologies can serve as symbolic tools within a community of practice supporting communication and knowledge sharing. We show that when a community’s perspective on an issue is stable, it opens the possibility for introducing knowledge services, based on an ontology co-constructed by knowledge engineers with stakeholders. Using a case study we describe our approach, ontology driven document enrichment, looking at how ontology construction and population can be supported by web based technologies. While tags in collaborative tagging systems serve primarily an indexingpurpose, facilitating search and navigation of resources, the use of the same tags bymore than one individual can yield a collective classification schema. We present anapproach for making explicit the semantics behind the tag space in social taggingsystems, so that this collaborative organization can emerge in the form of groups ofconcepts and partial ontologies. This is achieved by using a combination of shallowpre-processing strategies and statistical techniques together with knowledge providedby ontologies available on the semantic web. Preliminary results on the del.icio.us andFlickr tag sets show that the approach is very promising: it generates clusters withhighly related tags corresponding to concepts in ontologies and meaningfulrelationships among subsets of these tags can be identified. This wealth of data has spawned countless mashups that integrate heterogenous information, but using techniques that will not scale beyond a handful of sources. In contrast, the Semantic Web provides the key to large-scale data integration, yet still lacks approachable interfaces allowing contributions from non-specialists. In this paper we present Revyu, a reviewing and rating site in the Web 2.0 mould that is built on Semantic Web infrastructure and both publishes and consumes linked RDF data. This combination of approaches affords ease of interaction for regular users and ease of integration with external data sources.
