Our technique uses modifications based on typical substitutions web searchers make to their queries. In this way the new query is strongly related to the original query, containing terms closely related to all of the original terms. This contrasts with query expansion through pseudo-relevance feedback, which is costly and can lead to query drift. This also contrasts with query relaxation through boolean or TFIDF retrieval, which reduces the specificity of the query. We define a scale for evaluating query substitution, and show that our method performs well at generating new queries related to the original queries. We build a model for selecting between candidates, by using a number of features relating the query-candidate pair, and by fitting the model to human judgments of relevance of query suggestions. This further improves the quality of the candidates generated. Experiments show that our techniques significantly increase coverage and effectiveness in the setting of sponsored search.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Edinburgh, Scotland" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-323-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1135777.1135835" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Rosie Jones"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Benjamin Rey"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Omid Madani"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Wiley Greiner"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Tagging and searching: Search retrieval effectiveness of folksonomies on the World Wide Web

<dc:subject>InformationRetrieval search WebSearch toread </dc:subject>
P. Jason Morrison Information Processing & Management(2008)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/InformationRetrieval"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/search"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WebSearch"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/toread"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/262ac28c3d46df728a5d577f84d927be3/mkroell"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/262ac28c3d46df728a5d577f84d927be3/mkroell"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ipm.2007.12.010"/><swrc:date>Wed Oct 08 11:59:17 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Information Processing & Management</swrc:journal><swrc:pages>1397--1648</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Tagging and searching: Search retrieval effectiveness of folksonomies on the World Wide Web</swrc:title><swrc:volume>44</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2008</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>InformationRetrieval search WebSearch toread </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Many Web sites have begun allowing users to submit items to a collection and tag them with keywords. The folksonomies built from these tags are an interesting topic that has seen little empirical research. This study compared the search information retrieval (IR) performance of folksonomies from social bookmarking Web sites against search engines and subject directories. Thirty-four participants created 103 queries for various information needs. Results from each IR system were collected and participants judged relevance. Folksonomy search results overlapped with those from the other systems, and documents found by both search engines and folksonomies were significantly more likely to be judged relevant than those returned by any single IR system type. The search engines in the study had the highest precision and recall, but the folksonomies fared surprisingly well. Del.icio.us was statistically indistinguishable from the directories in many cases. Overall the directories were more precise than the folksonomies but they had similar recall scores. Better query handling may enhance folksonomy IR performance further. The folksonomies studied were promising, and may be able to improve Web search performance.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2473655" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2008-03-05 16:37:39" swrc:key="at"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1016/j.ipm.2007.12.010" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="P. Along with the rapid increase in the amount of social
bookmarks, future applications could leverage this data for enhancing search in the Web. This paper investigates the possibilityand potential benefits of a hybrid page ranking approach that would combine the ranking criteria of PageRank with the onebased on social bookmarks in order to improve the search in the Web. We demonstrate and discuss the results of analyticalstudy made in order to compare both popularity estimates. In addition, we propose a simple hybrid search method that combinesboth ranking metrics and we show some preliminary experiments using this approach. We hope that this study will shed new lighton the character of data in social bookmarking systems and foster development of new, effective search applications for theWeb.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Yusuke Yanbe"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Adam Jatowt"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Satoshi Nakamura"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Katsumi Tanaka"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

How people recall, recognize, and reuse search results

How people recall, recognize, and reuse search results

<dc:subject>search WebSearchResults WebSearch toread </dc:subject>
Jaime Teevan ACM Trans. We note the diversity of information goals that searchers have and the differing ways that goals are specified. We examine rare and common information goals that are specified using rare or common queries. We identify several significant differences in user behavior depending on the rarity of the query and the destination URL. We find that searchers are more likely to be successful when the frequencies of the query and destination URL are similar. We also establish that the behavioral differences observed for queries and goals of varying rarity persist even after accounting for potential confounding variables, including query length, search engine ranking, session duration, and task difficulty. Finally, using an information-theoretic measure of search difficulty, we show that the benefits obtained by search and navigation actions depend on the frequency of the information goal.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Doug Downey"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dan Liebling"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Susan Dumais"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name=" CIKM"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Entropy of search logs: how hard is search? with personalization? with backoff?

dblp

<dc:subject>personalization QueryLogAnalysis search entropy unsupervised seminal WebSearch ReadingGroup WWW09 </dc:subject>
Qiaozhu Mei und Kenneth Ward Church WSDM, Seite45-54. ACM, (2008)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/personalization"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/QueryLogAnalysis"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/search"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/entropy"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/unsupervised"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/seminal"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WebSearch"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/ReadingGroup"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WWW09"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2664f6f7e2facd5740c753c8fdf0de9b4/mkroell"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2664f6f7e2facd5740c753c8fdf0de9b4/mkroell"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/conf/wsdm/wsdm2008.html#MeiC08"/><swrc:date>Tue Sep 30 12:35:22 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>WSDM</swrc:booktitle><swrc:crossref>conf/wsdm/2008</swrc:crossref><swrc:pages>45-54</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Entropy of search logs: how hard is search? with personalization? with backoff?</swrc:title><swrc:year>2008</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>personalization QueryLogAnalysis search entropy unsupervised seminal WebSearch ReadingGroup WWW09 </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1341531.1341540" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2008-02-18" swrc:key="date"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Qiaozhu Mei"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kenneth Ward Church"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Marc Najork"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andrei Z. in other words, we infer that two queries are related if their popularities behave similarly over time. To this end, we first define a new measure of the temporal correlation of two queries based on the correlation coefficient of their frequency functions. We then conduct extensive experiments using our measure on two massive query streams from the MSN search engine, revealing that this technique can discover a wide range of semantically similar queries. Finally, we develop a method of efficiently finding the highest correlated queries for a given input query using far less space and time than the naive approach, making real-time implementation possible.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Chiba, Japan" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-046-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1060745.1060752" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Steve Chien"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Nicole Immorlica"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Personalized web search by mapping user queries to categories

Personalized web search by mapping user queries to categories

<dc:subject>personalization search query classification WebSearch toread WWW09 </dc:subject>
Fang Liu und Clement Yu und Weiyi Meng CIKM '02: Proceedings of the eleventh international conference on Information and knowledge management, Seite558--565. New York, NY, USA, ACM, (2002)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/personalization"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/search"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/query"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/classification"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WebSearch"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/toread"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WWW09"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2d5197251b456325659aceb68eb2032bc/mkroell"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2d5197251b456325659aceb68eb2032bc/mkroell"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=584884"/><swrc:date>Tue Sep 09 11:16:21 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>New York, NY, USA</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>CIKM '02: Proceedings of the eleventh international conference on Information and knowledge management</swrc:booktitle><swrc:pages>558--565</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Personalized web search by mapping user queries to categories</swrc:title><swrc:year>2002</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>personalization search query classification WebSearch toread WWW09 </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Current web search engines are built to serve all users, independent of the needs of any individual user. Personalization of web search is to carry out retrieval for each user incorporating his/her interests. We propose a novel technique to map a user query to a set of categories, which represent the user's search intention. This set of categories can serve as a context to disambiguate the words in the user's query. A user profile and a general profile are learned from the user's search history and a category hierarchy respectively. These two profiles are combined to map a user query into a set of categories. Several learning and combining algorithms are evaluated and found to be effective. Among the algorithms to learn a user profile, we choose the Rocchio-based method for its simplicity, efficiency and its ability to be adaptive. Experimental results indicate that our technique to personalize web search is both effective and efficient.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="McLean, Virginia, USA" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-58113-492-4" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/584792.584884" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Fang Liu"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Clement Yu"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Weiyi Meng"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
</rdf:RDF>
