After analyzing the number of publications of chemists listed in Chemical Abstracts 1907-1916 and the contributions of physicists listed in Auerbach's Geschi-chtstafeln der Physik, he observed that the number of persons making n contributions is about 1/n2 of those making one and the proportion of all contributors that make a single contribution is about 60%. Recently, investigators studying the applicability of Lotka's law to the humanities and to map librarianship may have misinterpreted Lotka's law and have concluded erroneously that the law applies to these fields. intraday technical trading strategies selected using
two methodologies, a genetic program and an optimized
linear forecasting model. When realistic transaction
costs and trading hours are taken into account, we find
no evidence of excess returns to the trading rules
derived with either methodology. Thus, our results are
consistent with market efficiency. We do find, however,
that the trading rules discover some remarkably stable
patterns in the data.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="doi:10.1016/S0261-5606(02)00101-8" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christopher J. The technique is based on monitoring the resonant frequencies of vibration. An introduction to the concepts of vibrational modes in beams is detailed first followed by a description of the experimental procedure for resonance frequency measurement. The result of a finite element (FE) analysis that is performed to identify the different modes of vibration of the beam specimen, are then presented. The resonance frequencies determined by the FE analysis are shown to match closely with the experimental values. A notch is introduced in the specimen and the effect of notch length on the resonant frequencies is studied by varying the notch depth. Experimental results are compared with the result of FE simulation of the beam with different notch lengths. The influence of a real crack on the frequencies of the vibrational modes is also studied by loading a specimen in a three-point bending configuration and propagating a crack in a controlled manner using a closed-loop testing machine. Analysis of the obtained data is performed to evaluate the response of the different vibrational modes of the concrete beam specimen to varying crack and notch lengths. Frequencies of the vibrational modes decrease consistently with increasing crack and notch lengths. There is a larger decrease associated with increasing notch length. Resonance frequencies are shown to be sensitive to crack and notch growth in concrete beams and can be used to effectively monitor the decrease in structural stiffness due to crack progress progression.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Provided by the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System" swrc:key="adsnote"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1999SPIE.3586..129S" swrc:key="adsurl"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="K.
