This paper seeks to describe the different ways in which Ellen Churchill Semple's 1911 volume Influences of geographic environment was received and understood - to explain why it was read both as a timely manifesto for a scientific approach to geographical research, and as a text which might damage the discipline's legitimacy. In exploring Influences 'trajectory of diffusion, I argue that it is possible to outline a geography of its reception - to reveal a locational particularity in its reading and reviewing. In so doing, I address questions relating to the epistemic and methodological bases of book geography, and describe the contribution that geography can make to explaining how knowledge and ideas, in textual form, are communicated and received.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Innes M. A brief review of the history of Japanese art/culture shows that sexuality is considered a legitimate topic for art. Erotic themes examined include heterosexual & homosexual sexual relationships, transvestitism, sadomasochism, incest, & bestiality. Although manga has been criticized for exalting rape, 90% of stories about rape or sexual assault analyzed showed the victim taking violent revenge on the attackers. Contrary to traditional Japanese portrayals of women, the females in manga are beautiful, erotic, & powerful. Manga is described as an art form that involves the reader with the characters in a "complex narrative framework in which sexuality is a positive virtue for both men & women." It does not reflect scientific truth or sexual realities but offers clues about people's hopes, interests, & ideals by suggesting imagined realms of possibilities that reconfigure the limitations of the world. 2 Appendixes, 119 References. Bridging the different national traditions in the USA and UK, as well as introducing the span of classic and ‘new’ cultural geography, it is divided into nine sections: approaching culture, cultural geography – a trans-Atlantic journey, landscape, nature, place, mobility, home – homeland - rootedness, difference and exclusion, and the business of culture. Each section begins with an introduction that discusses the key concept, its history and relation to cultural geography and connections to other disciplines and practices. Individual sections contain abridged book chapters and journal articles, each with their own focused introductions.</swrc:abstract><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Timothy Oakes"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction

Amazon.de: Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions): Jonathan Culler: Englische Bücher

<dc:subject>identity geography literature </dc:subject>
Jonathan Culler Very Short Introductions Oxford University Press, New Ed Edition, (2000) 1st ed. 1997

In this paper we outline and provide working examples a suite of tools which are detailed below, aimed at developing new applications of GIS and related technologies. GeoVUE is one of seven nodes in the National Centre for e-Social Science whose mission it is to develop web-based technologies for the social and geographical sciences. The Node, based at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London has developed a suite of free software allowing quick and easy visualisation of geographic data in systems such as Google Maps, Google Earth, Crysis and Second Life.

These tools address two issues, firstly that spatial data is still inherently difficult to share and visualise for the non-GIS trained academic or professional and secondly that a geographic data social network has the potential to dramatically open up data sources for both the public and professional geographer. With our applications of GMap Creator, and MapTube to name but two, we detail ways to intelligently visualise and share spatial data. This paper concludes with detailing usage and outreach as well as an insight into how such tools are already providing a significant impact to the outreach of geographic information.

The aesthetic appraisal, most clearly expressed by McGray’s well-known phrase of Gross National Cool fuelled into a concurrent process or re-emerging national pride in Japan. This article attempts to contextualize the global Japan pop-boom by tracing back the major causes, mechanisms and consequences of the ‘mangatization’ of the world. Mangatization refers to the border-transgressing diffusion of products and practices originally devised by Japan’s cultural industries for a local audience. Since the consumption of culture always resonates with attitudes and values, Japan’s popular culture going abroad has a visible impact upon Japan’s image in the world. I am going to argue that analytic concepts such as cultural imperialism or Japanization are misleading. In this regard it is tantamount to look at the new international division of labour within the production of global cultural commodities. The government belatedly and reactively jumped on the bandwagon in order to enhance Japan’s public image and to support the industries involved. Even though official attempts to control distribution and reception of Japan’s dream industries are doomed to fail, I forecast that Japan’s cultural diplomacy will continue to employ contemporary culture for building up a competitive brand image.
