This paper describes a simple,
cost-effective and file size-efficient method for producing video podcasts combining lecture slides and audio without a requirement for any specialist software. The results from a pilot scheme delivering supplementary lecture materials as audio and video podcasts are also presented, including data on download patterns and respons-
es to a survey of students on podcast use. These results reveal students´ enthusiasm for podcast recordings of lecture materials and their primary use by students in revision and preparation for assessments. Survey responses
also suggest little likely impact on lecture attendance as a consequence of podcasting, but indicate that podcast recordings of lectures may not be effective in facilitating mobile learning.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jonathan Copley"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

An evaluation of the mobile usage of e-lecture podcasts

<dc:subject>electures podcasts </dc:subject>
Wolfgang Hürst, Martina Welte, and Sabine Jung Mobility '07: Proceedings of the 4th international conference on mobile technology, applications, and systems and the 1st international symposium on Computer human interaction in mobile technology, page 16--23. New York, NY, USA, ACM, (2007)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/electures"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/podcasts"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/275048198a46ce9251329df804312c915/trahasch"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/275048198a46ce9251329df804312c915/trahasch"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><swrc:date>Wed Oct 28 22:40:10 CET 2009</swrc:date><swrc:address>New York, NY, USA</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>Mobility '07: Proceedings of the 4th international conference on mobile technology, applications, and systems and the 1st international symposium on Computer human interaction in mobile technology</swrc:booktitle><swrc:pages>16--23</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>An evaluation of the mobile usage of e-lecture podcasts</swrc:title><swrc:year>2007</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>electures podcasts </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Singapore" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-59593-819-0" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1378063.1378067" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Wolfgang Hürst"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Martina Welte"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Sabine Jung"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
Distributing recorded classroom lectures via podcasting for replay on mobile devices is gaining increasing popularity. However, few insights exist regarding the actual usage and usefulness of such files, especially in situations where high-quality recordings of those lectures are available for non-mobile replay as well. In this paper, we compare the results of two surveys done with local students who had access to podcasts as well as high-quality files for replay on laptops and desktop PCs on the one hand and external users who just subscribed to the podcasts on the other hand. We compare the usage of the different versions, address the motivations of the two different user groups, and discuss general issues such as perception of the quality of the audio and video signals. Based on our observations we conclude that the added value of such "e-lecture podcasts" is mainly in its potential for mobile usage, whereas most of the other arguments given in favor of such an e-lecture delivery are rather due to the better visibility and "advertisement" of podcasts then justifiable by the technology involved.

Use of audio podcast in K-12 and higher education: a review of research topics and methodologies

<dc:subject>podcasting podcasts </dc:subject>
Khe Foon Hew Educational Technology Research and Development (2009)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/podcasting"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/podcasts"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2ea495d0edd12e1c2801230067b304386/griesbau"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2ea495d0edd12e1c2801230067b304386/griesbau"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.springerlink.com/content/r282126x111r4237/"/><swrc:date>Tue Oct 06 11:26:38 CEST 2009</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Educational Technology Research and Development</swrc:journal><swrc:pages>333-357</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Use of audio podcast in K-12 and higher education: a review of research topics and methodologies</swrc:title><swrc:volume>57</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2009</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>podcasting podcasts </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Abstract\ \ This article reviews past empirical studies on the use of audio podcast (hereby referred to as podcast) in K-12 and higher education settings. Using the constant comparative method, this review is organized into three major research areas or topics: (a) participants' podcast usage profile, (b) effects of podcast on learners' outcomes, and (b) institutional aspects. Findings suggest that the most common use of podcasting is limited to either instructors distributing podcast recordings of lectures or supplementary materials for students to review subject material at their own time and place. A majority of the previous studies were descriptive, and were conducted in higher education and traditional course settings. Students generally enjoy using podcast, and tend to listen to the podcasts at home using desktop computers, rather than on the move (e.g., commuting to school) with a mobile device. Probably the main benefit of podcasting is that it allows students to listen to specific material that they missed or did not understand multiple times. The availability of podcast does not appear to encourage students to skip classes. We also discuss limitations of previous empirical studies, and provide some directions for future research related to the use of podcast in education settings.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2009-05-20 12:23:21" swrc:key="posted-at"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="3745872" swrc:key="citeulike-article-id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://www.springerlink.com/content/r282126x111r4237" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-1"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11423-008-9108-3" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-0"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/s11423-008-9108-3" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Khe Foon Hew"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

iTunes University and the classroom: Can podcasts replace Professors?

<dc:subject>Podcasts </dc:subject>
Dani McKinney, Jennifer L.
