Their large user communities and ever-growing networks of user-generated content have made them an attractive object of investigation for researchers from different disciplines like Social Network Analysis, Data Mining, Information Retrieval or Knowledge Discovery. In this paper, we summarize and extend our work on different aspects of this branch of Web 2.0 research, demonstrated and evaluated within our own social bookmark and publication sharing system BibSonomy, which is currently among the three most popular systems of its kind. We structure this presentation along the different interaction phases of a user with our system, coupling the relevant research questions of each phase with the corresponding implementation issues. This approach reveals in a systematic fashion important aspects and results of the broad bandwidth of folksonomy research like capturing of emergent semantics, spam detection, ranking algorithms, analogies to search engine log data, personalized tag recommendations and information extraction techniques. We conclude that when integrating a real-life application like BibSonomy into research, certain constraints have to be considered; but in general, the tight interplay between our scientific work and the running system has made BibSonomy a valuable platform for demonstrating and evaluating Web 2.0 research.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1066-8888" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/s00778-010-0208-4" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominik Benz"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Robert Jäschke"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Beate Krause"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Folke Mitzlaff"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christoph Schmitz"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_7></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Data Sharing by Scientists: Practices and Perceptions

<dc:subject>OpenData Primärdaten openaccess research_data sharing </dc:subject>
Carol Tenopir, Suzie Allard, Kimberly Douglass, Arsev Umur Aydinoglu, Lei Wu, Eleanor Read, Maribeth Manoff, and Mike Frame PLoS ONE 6(6):e21101 (June 2011)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/OpenData"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Primärdaten"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/openaccess"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/research_data"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/sharing"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/272b03ed7d6181b2652223a734f0b3993/ch.gutknecht"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/272b03ed7d6181b2652223a734f0b3993/ch.gutknecht"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dx.doi.org/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0021101"/><swrc:date>Wed Nov 16 02:12:07 CET 2011</swrc:date><swrc:journal>PLoS ONE</swrc:journal><swrc:month>06</swrc:month><swrc:number>6</swrc:number><swrc:pages>e21101</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Public Library of Science"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Data Sharing by Scientists: Practices and Perceptions</swrc:title><swrc:volume>6</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2011</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>OpenData Primärdaten openaccess research_data sharing </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Scientific research in the 21st century is more data intensive and collaborative than in the past. It is important to study the data practices of researchers – data accessibility, discovery, re-use, preservation and, particularly, data sharing. Data sharing is a valuable part of the scientific method allowing for verification of results and extending research from prior results.

        </sec>
        <sec>

Methodology/Principal Findings

A total of 1329 scientists participated in this survey exploring current data sharing practices and perceptions of the barriers and enablers of data sharing. Scientists do not make their data electronically available to others for various reasons, including insufficient time and lack of funding. Most respondents are satisfied with their current processes for the initial and short-term parts of the data or research lifecycle (collecting their research data; searching for, describing or cataloging, analyzing, and short-term storage of their data) but are not satisfied with long-term data preservation. Many organizations do not provide support to their researchers for data management both in the short- and long-term. If certain conditions are met (such as formal citation and sharing reprints) respondents agree they are willing to share their data. There are also significant differences and approaches in data management practices based on primary funding agency, subject discipline, age, work focus, and world region.

        </sec>
        <sec>

Conclusions/Significance

Barriers to effective data sharing and preservation are deeply rooted in the practices and culture of the research process as well as the researchers themselves. New mandates for data management plans from NSF and other federal agencies and world-wide attention to the need to share and preserve data could lead to changes. Large scale programs, such as the NSF-sponsored DataNET (including projects like DataONE) will both bring attention and resources to the issue and make it easier for scientists to apply sound data management principles.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1371/journal.pone.0021101" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Carol Tenopir"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Suzie Allard"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kimberly Douglass"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Arsev Umur Aydinoglu"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Lei Wu"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Eleanor Read"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="Maribeth Manoff"/></rdf:_7><rdf:_8><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mike Frame"/></rdf:_8></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
PLoS ONE: Data Sharing by Scientists: Practices and Perceptions

Classifying ecommerce information sharing behaviour by youths on social networking sites

<dc:subject>Classifying behaviour by ecommerce information networking on sharing sites social youths </dc:subject>
Bernard J. Using a survey of 34,514 respondents from myYearbook.com, the research reported in this paper is an inferential analysis of information seeking and sharing behaviours in the ecommerce domain on four social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, myYearbook and Twitter). Using k-means clustering analysis, we find clusters within this demographic based on levels of being connected on and being engaged with social networking services. Research results show that the majority of this demographic have accounts on multiple social networking sites, with more than 40% having profiles on three social networking sites and an additional 20% having four social networking accounts. We also investigate the motivations for using different social media sites, showing that the reasons for engaging differ among sites. Particularly influential on future business services will be the connection of the real with the virtual world by embedding computers or smallest processors, memory chips, and sensors into the environment and into physical objects, as well as using natural, multimodal customer interaction. Bearing in mind that ubiquitous computing entails the interaction of mobile smart objects and local smart environments hosted by different service providers, we propose an open approach to encourage the development of new and innovative smart applications and services. Considering the Open Source community, we assert that such an open approach reveals innovation potentials that cannot be achieved in proprietary information system environments. Most research projects, as well as commercial initiatives, however, focus mainly on specific, proprietary applications like smart shopping environments, and do not incorporate further prospects of using an open approach. Therefore, this chapter discusses as a first step the impact of Open Innovation in a world of ubiquitous computing from an economic perspective. Then, the design of an Open Object Information Infrastructure (OOII) that enables Open Innovation in the context of ubiquitous computing is presented. Finally, an innovative smart service called the Federative Library (FedLib), which represents a first instantiation of the OOII, is introduced to demonstrate the feasibility of the design.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christian Schmitt"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Detlef Schoder"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kai Fischbach"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Steffen Muhle"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Soraya Kouadri Mostefaoui"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Zakaria Maamar"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="George M. our own system BibSonomy, which allows for sharing both bookmarks

In particular, UGC sites are creating new viewing patterns and social interactions, empowering users to be more creative, and developing new business opportunities. To better understand the impact of UGC systems, we have analyzed YouTube, the world's largest UGC VoD system. Based on a large amount of data collected, we provide an in-depth study of YouTube and other similar UGC systems. In particular, we study the popularity life-cycle of videos, the intrinsic statistical properties of requests and their relationship with video age, and the level of content aliasing or of illegal content in the system. We also provide insights on the potential for more efficient UGC VoD systems (e.g. utilizing P2P techniques or making better use of caching). Finally, we discuss the opportunities to leverage the latent demand for niche videos that are not reached today due to information filtering effects or other system scarcity distortions. Overall, we believe that the results presented in this paper are crucial in understanding UGC systems and can provide valuable information to ISPs, site administrators, and content owners with major commercial and technical implications.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="San Diego, California, USA" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-59593-908-1" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1145/1298306.1298309" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Meeyoung Cha"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Haewoon Kwak"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Pablo Rodriguez"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Yong-Yeol Ahn"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Sue Moon"/></rdf:_5></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
I tube, you tube, everybody tubes

Exploring social dynamics in online media sharing

<dc:subject>sharing social </dc:subject>
Martin J. This development has supported media sharing and search services providing hosting, indexing and access to large, online media repositories. Many of these sharing services also have a social aspect to them. This paper provides an initial analysis of the social interactions on a video sharing and search service (www.youtube.com). Results show that many users do not form social networks in the online community and a very small number do not appear to contribute to the wider community. However, it does seem those people who do use the available tools have much a greater tendency to form social connections.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Banff, Alberta, Canada" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-59593-654-7" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1145/1242572.1242804" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Martin J. There is a growing trend pointing to life publishing and life logging using mobile devices. Users are sharing their experiences and their life with friends in real-time by posting blog notes, images and video clips from their phones to social media services. In addition, people are tagging content either by manually or using sensory data with their phones. An interesting question to be asked is; How users are experiencing these applications and what issues make them to be successfully adopted? This workshop will offer an interdisciplinary discussion forum for both practitioners and academics interested in conceptualizing, designing and evaluating emerging social mobile media concepts and applications. The workshop, through a series of interactive presentations, will facilitate discussions aiming at identify and summarize main theoretical and interaction design concerns related to the increasing use of social mobile media in a variety of settings. The main goal of the workshop is to find out ideas that suggest promising directions for future research on social mobile media.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Bonn, Germany" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-60558-281-8" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1145/1613858.1613977" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jari Multisilta"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Marcelo Milrad"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
Sharing Experiences with Social Mobile Media

BibSonomy: A Social Bookmark and Publication Sharing System

<dc:subject>Bibsonomy Folksonomies Linh Literaturverwaltung Literaturverwaltungssoftware SocialWeb sharing </dc:subject>
Andreas Hotho, Robert Jäschke, Christoph Schmitz, and Gerd Stumme Proceedings of the Conceptual Structures Tool Interoperability Workshop at the 14th International Conference on Conceptual Structures, page 87-102. Aalborg University Press, (2006)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Bibsonomy"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Folksonomies"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Linh"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Literaturverwaltung"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Literaturverwaltungssoftware"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/SocialWeb"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/sharing"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2a6faae355d867b5f998ed30e79eec3cf/ulbgroup"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2a6faae355d867b5f998ed30e79eec3cf/ulbgroup"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/jaeschke/paper/hotho06bibsonomy.pdf"/><swrc:date>Wed Jun 23 16:41:21 CEST 2010</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>Proceedings of the Conceptual Structures Tool Interoperability Workshop at the 14th International Conference on Conceptual Structures</swrc:booktitle><swrc:pages>87-102</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Aalborg University Press"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>BibSonomy: A Social Bookmark and Publication Sharing System</swrc:title><swrc:year>2006</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>Bibsonomy Folksonomies Linh Literaturverwaltung Literaturverwaltungssoftware SocialWeb sharing </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Social bookmark tools are rapidly emerging on the Web.
