Social bookmark tools are rapidly emerging on the Web. In such systems users are setting up lightweight conceptual structures called folksonomies. The reason for their immediate success is the fact that no specific skills are needed for participating. In this paper we specify a formal model for folksonomies and briefly describe our own system BibSonomy, which allows for sharing both bookmarks and publication references in a kind of personal library. 1</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="ja" swrc:key="read"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Robert Jäschke"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christoph Schmitz"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Moonjeong Kang"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
CiteSeerX — BibSonomy: A social bookmark and publication sharing system

Stop Thinking, start Tagging - Tag Semantics emerge from Collaborative Verbosity

<dc:subject>socialweb semantics tagging socialbookmarking semantic folksonomy folksonomies emerge semanticweb </dc:subject>
Christian Körner, Dominik Benz, Markus Strohmaier, Andreas Hotho, and Gerd Stumme Proceedings of the 19th International World Wide Web Conference WWW 2010, Raleigh, NC, USA, ACM, (April 2010)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/socialweb"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/semantics"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/tagging"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/socialbookmarking"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/semantic"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/folksonomy"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/folksonomies"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/emerge"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/semanticweb"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/245f8d8f2a8251a5e988c596a5ebb3f2d/enitsirhc"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/245f8d8f2a8251a5e988c596a5ebb3f2d/enitsirhc"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/benz/papers/2010/koerner2010thinking.pdf"/><swrc:date>Tue Jan 11 13:32:57 CET 2011</swrc:date><swrc:address>Raleigh, NC, USA</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>Proceedings of the 19th International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2010)</swrc:booktitle><swrc:month>apr</swrc:month><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Stop Thinking, start Tagging - Tag Semantics emerge from Collaborative Verbosity</swrc:title><swrc:year>2010</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>socialweb semantics tagging socialbookmarking semantic folksonomy folksonomies emerge semanticweb </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Recent research provides evidence for the presence of emergent semantics in collaborative tagging systems. While several methods have been proposed, little is known about the factors that influence the evolution of semantic structures in these systems. A natural hypothesis is that the quality of the emergent semantics depends on the pragmatics of tagging: Users with certain usage patterns might contribute more to the resulting semantics than others. In this work, we propose several measures which enable a pragmatic differentiation of taggers by their degree of contribution to emerging semantic structures. We distinguish between categorizers, who typically use a small set of tags as a replacement for hierarchical classification schemes, and describers, who are annotating resources with a wealth of freely associated, descriptive keywords. To study our hypothesis, we apply semantic similarity measures to 64 different partitions of a real-world and large-scale folksonomy containing different ratios of categorizers and describers. Our results not only show that ‘verbose’ taggers are most useful for the emergence of tag semantics, but also that a subset containing only 40% of the most ‘verbose’ taggers can produce results that match and even outperform the semantic precision obtained from the whole dataset. Moreover, the results suggest that there exists a causal link between the pragmatics of tagging and resulting emergent semantics. This work is relevant for designers and analysts of tagging systems interested (i) in fostering the semantic development of their platforms, (ii) in identifying users introducing “semantic noise?, and (iii) in learning ontologies.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christian Körner"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominik Benz"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Markus Strohmaier"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_5></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Patterns and Inconsistencies in Collaborative Tagging Systems: An Examination of Tagging Practices

<dc:subject>DISS folksonomy powerlaw socialbookmarking sosoantrag tagging tagging\_comparison </dc:subject>
Margaret Kipp, and D. Our approach uses a novel and efficient discriminative clustering method that groups posts based on the textual contents of the posts. The method also generates a ranked list of discriminating terms for each cluster. We apply the clustering method to build two clustering models – one based on the tags assigned to posts and the other based on the content terms of posts. Given a new posting, a ranked list of tags and content terms is determined from the clustering models. The final tag recommendation is based on these ranked lists. If the poster’s tagging history is available then this is also utilized in the final tag recommendation. The approach is evaluated on data from BibSonomy, a social bookmarking system. Prediction results show that the tag-based clustering model is more accurate than the termbased clustering model. Combining the predictions from both models is better than either model’s predictions. Significant improvement in recommendation is obtained over the baseline method of recommending the most frequent tags for all posts.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1613-0073" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Malik Tahir Hassan"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Asim Karim"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Suresh Manandhar"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="James Cussens"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Folke Eisterlehner"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Robert Jäschke"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Cyberscience 2.0 oder 1.2? Bookmarks are analyzed to build a new generation of Web mining techniques and new ways to search, recommend, surf, personalize and visualize the Web. We present a semantic similarity measure for URLs that takes advantage both of the hierarchical structure of the bookmark files of individual users, and of collaborative filtering across users. We analyze the social bookmark network induced by the similarity measure. A search and recommendation system is built from a number of ranking algorithms based on prestige, generality, and novelty measures extracted from the similarity data.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Lubomira Stoilova"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Comp Sci Dept"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ana G. As social bookmarking systems are growing in popularity, search algorithms have been developed that transfer the idea of link-based rankings in the Web to a social bookmarking system’s
data structure. These rankings differ from traditional search engine rankings in that they incorporate the rating of users.

In this study, we compare search in social bookmarking systems with traditionalWeb search. In the first part, we compare the user activity and behaviour in both kinds of systems, as well as the overlap of the underlying sets of URLs. In the second part,we compare graph-based and vector space rankings for social bookmarking systems with commercial search engine rankings.

Our experiments are performed on data of the social bookmarking system Del.icio.us and on rankings and log data from Google, MSN, and AOL. We will show that part of the difference between the systems is due to different behaviour (e. g., the concatenation of multi-word lexems
to single terms in Del.icio.us), and that real-world events may trigger similar behaviour in both kinds of systems. We will also show that a graph-based ranking approach on folksonomies yields results that are closer to the rankings of the commercial search engines than vector space
retrieval, and that the correlation is high in particular for the domains that are well covered by the social bookmarking system.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Beate Krause"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
</rdf:RDF>
