For tasks like synonym detection and discovery of concept hierarchies, many researchers introduced measures of tag similarity. Even though most of these measures appear very natural, their design often seems to be rather ad hoc, and the underlying assumptions on the notion of similarity are not made explicit. A more systematic characterization and validation of tag similarity in terms of formal representations of knowledge is still lacking. Here we address this issue and analyze several measures of tag similarity: Each measure is computed on data from the social bookmarking system del.icio.us and a semantic grounding is provided by mapping pairs of similar tags in the folksonomy to pairs of synsets in Wordnet, where we use validated measures of semantic distance to characterize the semantic relation between the mapped tags. This exposes important features of the investigated similarity measures and indicates which ones are better suited in the context of a given semantic application.}</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2011-09-09 20:06:23" swrc:key="posted-at"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="4718854" swrc:key="citeulike-article-id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://www.springerlink.com/content/9044260283881v78" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-1"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-540-88564-1\_39" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-0"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/978-3-540-88564-1\_39" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ciro Cattuto"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominik Benz"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Amit Sheth"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Steffen Staab"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mike Dean"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Massimo Paolucci"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Diana Maynard"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Timothy Finin"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan"/></rdf:_7></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Ontology Merging using Answer Set Programming and WordNet

<dc:subject>ASP wordnet </dc:subject>
<span class="authorEditorList"><a href="/author/Bock">Jürgen Bock</a> The result of the indexing procedure is a vector in which some of the terms represent word senses instead of word stems. Retrieval experiments comparing the effectivenss of these sense-based vectors vs. stem-based vectors show the stem-based vectors to be superior overall, although the sense-based vectors do improve the performance of some queries. The overall degradation is due in large part to the difficulty of disambiguating senses in short query statements. An analysis of these results suggests two conclusions: the IS-A links define a generalization/specialization hierarchy that is not sufficient to reliably select the correct sense of a noun from the set of fine sense distinctions in WordNet; and missing correct matches because of incorrect sense resolution has a much more deleterious effect on retrieval performance than does making spurious matches.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="160715" swrc:key="acmid"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0-89791-605-0" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10" swrc:key="numpages"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/160688.160715" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ellen M. important resource available to researchers in computational linguistics,
text analysis, and many related areas. Its design is inspired by
current psycholinguistic and computational theories of human lexical
memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are organized
into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexicalized concept.
Different relations link the synonym sets.

The purpose of this volume is twofold. First, it discusses the design
of WordNet and the theoretical motivations behind it. Second, it
provides a survey of representative applications, including word
sense identification, information retrieval, selectional preferences

Users are thus quick to adopt this system and create extensive knowledge annotations on the Web.
However, because of the simplicity of the folksonomy model, the semantics of the tags used is not explicit and can only be inferred from the context of use of the tags.
This is a barrier for the automatic use of such knowledge organisation systems by computers and new techniques have to be developed to extract the semantic of the tags used.
In this paper we discuss an algorithm to detect new senses of terms in a folksonomy; we also propose a formal evaluation methodology that will enable to compare results between different approaches in the field.

important resource available to researchers in computational linguistics,
text analysis, and many related areas.

Second, it
provides a survey of representative applications, including word
sense identification, information retrieval, selectional preferences
	of verbs, and lexical chains.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2009.11.15" swrc:key="timestamp"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="MIT Press Product Page:http\://mitpress.mit.edu/book-home.tcl?isbn=026206197X:URL;Amazon Search inside:http\://www.amazon.de/gp/reader/026206197X/:URL;Google Books:http\://books.google.de/books?isbn=978-0-262-06197-1:URL" swrc:key="file"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-0-262-06197-1" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="flint" swrc:key="owner"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christiane Fellbaum"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
Entire set of citations (10/2009)

Measuring Semantic Similarity in the Taxonomy of WordNet.

<dc:subject>measuring semantic similarity taxonomy wordnet </dc:subject>
<span class="authorEditorList"><a href="/author/Yang">Dongqiang Yang</a>, and <a href="/author/Powers">David M. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach regarding similarity and relatedness tasks are discussed, and a combination is presented. Each of our methods independently provide the best results in their class on the RG and WordSim353 datasets, and a supervised combination of them yields the best published results on all datasets. Finally, we pioneer cross-lingual similarity, showing that our methods are easily adapted for a cross-lingual task with minor losses.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Boulder, Colorado" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1620758" swrc:key="acmid"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-932432-41-1" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="9" swrc:key="numpages"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Eneko Agirre"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Enrique Alfonseca"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Keith Hall"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jana Kravalova"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Marius Pa\c{s}ca"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Aitor Soroa"/></rdf:_6></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>
A study on similarity and relatedness using distributional and WordNet-based approaches

Conceptual Analysis of Lexical Taxonomies: the case of WordNet Top-level

<dc:subject>foundationalontology ontologyevaluation wordnet </dc:subject>
<span class="authorEditorList"><a href="/author/Gangemi">Aldo Gangemi</a>, <a href="/author/Guarino">Nicola Guarino</a>, and <a href="/author/Oltramari">Alessandro Oltramari</a>
