This paper considers some previously-undescribed techniques for automatically detecting spam pages, examines the effectiveness of these techniques in isolation and when aggregated using classification algorithms. When combined, our heuristics correctly identify 2,037 (86.2%) of the 2,364 spam pages (13.8%) in our judged collection of 17,168 pages, while misidentifying 526 spam and non-spam pages (3.1%).</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Edinburgh, Scotland" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-323-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1135777.1135794" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Alexandros Ntoulas"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Marc Najork"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mark Manasse"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dennis Fetterly"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Detecting semantic cloaking on the web

Detecting semantic cloaking on the web

<dc:subject>cloaking web spam </dc:subject>
Baoning Wu und Brian D. Davison WWW '06: Proceedings of the 15th international conference on World Wide Web, Seite819--828. New York, NY, USA, ACM, (2006)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/cloaking"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/web"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/spam"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2696889b2eeda8dd8391c9c1ec156634b/beate"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2696889b2eeda8dd8391c9c1ec156634b/beate"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1135777.1135901"/><swrc:date>Mon Apr 07 10:24:05 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>New York, NY, USA</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>WWW '06: Proceedings of the 15th international conference on World Wide Web</swrc:booktitle><swrc:pages>819--828</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Detecting semantic cloaking on the web</swrc:title><swrc:year>2006</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>cloaking web spam </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>By supplying different versions of a web page to search engines and to browsers, a content provider attempts to cloak the real content from the view of the search engine. Semantic cloaking refers to differences in meaning between pages which have the effect of deceiving search engine ranking algorithms. In this paper, we propose an automated two-step method to detect semantic cloaking pages based on different copies of the same page downloaded by a web crawler and a web browser. The first step is a filtering step, which generates a candidate list of semantic cloaking pages. In the second step, a classifier is used to detect semantic cloaking pages from the candidates generated by the filtering step. Experiments on manually labeled data sets show that we can generate a classifier with a precision of 93% and a recall of 85%. We apply our approach to links from the dmoz Open Directory Project and estimate that more than 50,000 of these pages employ semantic cloaking.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Edinburgh, Scotland" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-323-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1135777.1135901" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Baoning Wu"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Brian D. We argue that the importance of the relevance at the top position necessitates special handling of the top web search result for some queries. We propose an effective approach of leveraging millions of past user interactions with a web search engine to automatically detect "best bet" top results preferred by majority of users. Interestingly, this problem can be more effectively addressed with classification than using state-of-the-art general ranking methods. Furthermore, we show that our general machine learning approach achieves precision comparable to a heavily tuned, domain-specific algorithm, with significantly higher coverage. Our experiments over millions of user interactions for thousands of queries demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our techniques.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Philadelphia, PA, USA" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-339-5" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1150402.1150526" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Eugene Agichtein"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Zijian Zheng"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

On the community-based explanation of search results

On the community-based explanation of search results

<dc:subject>collaboration personalization search community social-search web </dc:subject>
Maurice Coyle und Barry Smyth IUI '07: Proceedings of the 12th international conference on Intelligent user interfaces, Seite282--285. New York, NY, USA, ACM Press, (2007)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/collaboration"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/personalization"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/search"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/community"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/social-search"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/web"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/26da2d3974c61b3bf3e40548d769f9a26/beate"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/26da2d3974c61b3bf3e40548d769f9a26/beate"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1216347&coll=GUIDE&dl=GUIDE&CFID=25275286&CFTOKEN=42266487"/><swrc:date>Mon Jun 11 14:13:28 CEST 2007</swrc:date><swrc:address>New York, NY, USA</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>IUI '07: Proceedings of the 12th international conference on Intelligent user interfaces</swrc:booktitle><swrc:pages>282--285</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM Press"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>On the community-based explanation of search results</swrc:title><swrc:year>2007</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>collaboration personalization search community social-search web </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Collaborative Web search (CWS) is an approach to personalizing search results, returned by an underlying search engine(s), to the preferences of a community of like-minded searchers.
