a computerized 1987 Roget's Thesaurus, and evaluated it by performing
a few typical tests. We compare the results of these tests with those
produced by WordNet-based similarity measures. One of the benchmarks
is Miller and Charles list of 30 noun pairs to which human judges
had assigned similarity measures. We correlate these measures with
those computed by several NLP systems. The 30 pairs can be traced
back to Rubenstein and Goodenoughs 65 pairs, which we have also
studied. Our Rogets-based system gets correlations of .878 for the
smaller and .818 for the larger list of noun pairs; this is quite
close to the .885 that Resnik obtained when he employed humans to
replicate the Miller and Charles experiment. We further evaluate
our measure by using Rogets and WordNet to answer 80 TOEFL, 50 ESL
and 300 Readers Digest questions: the correct synonym must be selected
amongst a group of four words. Our system gets 78.75\%, 82.00\% and
	74.33\% of the questions respectively.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2007.05.18" swrc:key="timestamp"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Marco" swrc:key="owner"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mario Jarmasz"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Stan Szpakowicz"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Roget’s Thesaurus as an Electronic Lexical Knowledge Base

<dc:subject>knowledge thesaurus nlp </dc:subject>
M. Jarmasz and S. Szpakowicz (2001)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/knowledge"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/thesaurus"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/nlp"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/205c46f0c52ab405ffdd48a2d7ec7a734/brightbyte"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/205c46f0c52ab405ffdd48a2d7ec7a734/brightbyte"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InBook"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~mjarmasz/pubs/TR-2000-02.pdf"/><swrc:date>Tue May 20 11:12:50 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:series>NIE BEZ ZNACZENIA. Yet their production is labor-intensive, and few domains have comprehensive thesauri that cover domain-specific concepts and contemporary usage. One approach, which has been attempted without much success for decades, is to seek statistical natural language processing algorithms that work on free text. Instead, we propose to replace costly professional indexers with thousands of dedicated amateur volunteers—namely, those that are producing Wikipedia. This vast, open encyclopedia represents a rich tapestry of topics and semantics and a huge investment of human effort and judgment. We show how this can be directly exploited to provide WikiSauri: manually-defined yet inexpensive thesaurus structures that are specifically tailored to expose the topics, terminology and semantics of individual document collections. To convert thesauri to RDF for use in Semantic Web applications and to ensure the quality and utility of the conversion a structured method is required. Moreover, if different thesauri are to be interoperable without complicated mappings, a standard schema for thesauri is required. This paper presents a method for conversion of thesauri to the SKOS RDF/OWL schema, which is a proposal for such a standard under development by W3C’s Semantic Web Best Practices Working Group. We apply the method to three thesauri: IPSV, GTAA and MeSH. With these case studies we evaluate our method and the applicability of SKOS for representing thesauri.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1373104" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="3" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/11762256\_10" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mark van Assem"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="V\'{e}ronique Malais\'{e}"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Alistair Miles"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Guus Schreiber"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

WordNet: an electronic lexical database

<dc:subject>wordnet CITED thesaurus classic </dc:subject>
C. Fellbaum MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, (1998)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/wordnet"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/CITED"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/thesaurus"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/classic"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2f07d7287d2583d960fe848ad686a1d8a/brightbyte"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2f07d7287d2583d960fe848ad686a1d8a/brightbyte"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Book"/><swrc:date>Wed May 14 00:22:55 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>Cambridge, MA</swrc:address><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="MIT Press"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>{WordNet: an electronic lexical database}</swrc:title><swrc:year>1998</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>wordnet CITED thesaurus classic </swrc:keywords><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="C. Information architecture is the discipline dealing with the modern version of this problem: how to organize web sites so that users can actually find what they are looking for. Information architects have so far applied known and well-tried tools from library science to solve this problem, and now topic maps are sailing up as another potential tool for information architects. This raises the question of how topic maps compare with the traditional solutions, and that is the question this paper attempts to address. The paper argues that topic maps go beyond the traditional solutions in the sense that they provide a framework within which they can be represented as they are, but also extended in ways which significantly improve information retrieval.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Lars Marius Garshol"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Electric Words: Dictionaries, Computers, and Meanings

<dc:subject>dictionary WW-SHOULD taxonomie WW-CITED thesaurus nlp knowledge </dc:subject>
Y. Wilks and B.M. Slator and L.M. Guthrie MIT Press, (1996)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/dictionary"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WW-SHOULD"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/taxonomie"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/WW-CITED"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/thesaurus"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/nlp"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/knowledge"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2cf87bf891c2608d7d8209d24ad3f376c/brightbyte"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2cf87bf891c2608d7d8209d24ad3f376c/brightbyte"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Book"/><swrc:date>Wed Mar 26 13:58:58 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="MIT Press"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>{Electric Words: Dictionaries, Computers, and Meanings}</swrc:title><swrc:year>1996</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>dictionary WW-SHOULD taxonomie WW-CITED thesaurus nlp knowledge </swrc:keywords><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Y. Structuring of controlled vocabularies, including taxonomies, thesauri and ontologies has been studied for many years. In this paper we shall investigate the use of one such method of defining controlled vocabularies; thesauri. We compare approaches which have been proposed for expressing such controlled vocabularies in the Semantic Web, and propose a common forms to allow a migration path from existing thesauri to the Semantic Web. Using RDF allows data to be linked to and/or merged with other RDF data by semantic web applications. The Semantic Web, which is based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF), provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.</swrc:abstract><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Alistair Miles"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

LeXFlow: A System for Cross-Fertilization of Computational Lexicons.

dblp

<dc:subject>lexicon thesaurus </dc:subject>
Maurizio Tesconi
