intuitions. But the history of technology is replete with examples of good theories greatly
aiding the development of useful technology. Where, then, might we look for theories to
help us design computer-supported cooperative work tools? In this paper, we will
describe one possible perspective-the interdisciplinary study of coordination-that
focuses, in part, on how people work together now and how they might do so differently
with new information technologies.
In one sense, there is little that is new about the study of coordination. Many different
disciplines-including computer science, sociology, political science, management
science, systems theory, economics, linguistics, and psychology-have all dealt, in one
way or another, with fundamental questions about coordination. Furthermore, several
previous writers have suggested that theories about coordination are likely to be
important for designing cooperative work tools (e.g., [Holt88], lWino861).
We hope to suggest here, however, that the potential for fruitful interdisciplinary
connections concerning coordination is much greater than has as yet been widely
appreciated. For instance, we believe that fundamentally similar coordination phenomena
arise-unrecognized as such-in many of the fields listed above. Though a single
coherent body of theory about coordination does not yet exist, many different disciplines
could both contribute to and benefit from more general theories of coordination. Of
particular interest to researchers in the field of computer-supported cooperative work is
the prospect of drawing on a much richer body of existing and future work in these fields
than has previously been suggested.
In this paper, we will first describe what we mean by “coordination theory” and give
examples of how previous research on computer-supported cooperative work can be
interpreted from this perspective. We will then suggest one way of developing this
perspective further by proposing tentative definitions of coordination and analyzing its
components in more detail.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Thomas Malone"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kevin Crowston"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Tools for Inventing Organizations: Toward a Handbook of Organizational Processes

<dc:subject>diss </dc:subject>
Thomas Malone und Kevin Crowston Massachusetts Institute of Technologie, (1993)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/diss"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/219717f145e16c84cdfda12ba65999937/callagialla"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/219717f145e16c84cdfda12ba65999937/callagialla"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#PhDThesis"/><swrc:date>Thu Mar 20 21:24:32 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Center for Coordination Science"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:school><swrc:University swrc:name="Massachusetts Institute of Technologie"/></swrc:school><swrc:title>Tools for Inventing Organizations: Toward a Handbook of Organizational Processes</swrc:title><swrc:year>1993</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>diss </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>This paper describes a new project intended to provide a
firmer theoretical and empirical foundation for such tasks
as enterprise modeling, enterprise integration, and process
re-engineering.
The project includes (1) collecting examples of how
different organizations perform sim'lar processes, and (2)
representing these examples in an on-line "process
handbook" which includes the relative advantages of the
alternatives. The handbook is intended to help (a) redesign
existing Organizational processes, (b) invent new
organizational processes that take advantage of
information technology, and perhaps (e) automatically
generate sofivare to support organizational processes.
A key element of the work is a novel approach to
representing processes at various levels of abstraction.
This approach uses ideas from computer science about
inheritance and from coordinalion theory about managing
dependencies. Its primary advantage is that it allows users
to explicitly represent the similarities (and differences)
among related processes and to easily find or generate
sensible alternatives for how a given process could be
performed.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2007-10-10" swrc:key="urldate"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Thomas Malone"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Kevin Crowston"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Competing with dual business models: A contingency approach

<dc:subject>diss </dc:subject>
Constantinos Markides und Constantinos D. Charitou Academy of Management Executive18(3):22-36(2004)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/diss"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/285c368d967acb33079c3fd4bf6d7e06c/callagialla"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/285c368d967acb33079c3fd4bf6d7e06c/callagialla"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><swrc:date>Thu Mar 20 21:24:32 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Academy of Management Executive</swrc:journal><swrc:number>3</swrc:number><swrc:pages>22-36</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Competing with dual business models: A contingency approach</swrc:title><swrc:volume>18</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2004</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>diss </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>How can a company adopt two different business models in the same market? This
question has become particularly pressing for an increasing number of established
companies that have recently come under attack from “strategic innovators”—companies
that attack the established players by using radically different business models. The
success of these attackers in gaining market share has created a big dilemma for
established companies. On the one hand, by embracing the new business models that the
innovators have introduced in their markets, established companies can potentially take
advantage of a great growth opportunity. On the other hand, because the new business
models often conflict with the established ones, companies that try to compete by
adopting both of them risk mismanaging both and destroying value.
How, then, can established companies embrace the new business models without
diluting and destroying their existing models? Our research explores this question and
offers a contingency solution to this problem. We show that the challenge for companies
is to balance the benefits of keeping the two business models separate while at the same
time integrating them enough so as to allow them to exploit synergies with one another.
We describe four possible strategies that companies can use to achieve such a balance
and identify what separates success from failure for each strategy.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Constantinos Markides"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Constantinos D.
