Considering the use of IMS in fields of operation such as e-commerce and e-government by means of future scenarios, we conclude that many workflows would work more effectively based on IMS while integrating a better privacy level than up to now. The evaluation of currently available applications and studies of concepts respectively prototypes of identity management anticipates the path which technological development will pursue. Thereby experts expect complicated usability of Identity Management Applications, an inadequate level of computer security and privacy, and also lengthy standardisation processes as main bottlenecks for developing a society-wide Identity Management System.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name=" EU"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Mind, Self and Society

<dc:subject>ME identity I sociology psychology </dc:subject>
<span style="color:#555555;">George H. <a href="http://www.bibsonomy.org/author/Mead">Mead</a> </span><em>University of Chicago Press, </em><em>London, </em>(<em>1934</em>)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/ME"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/identity"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/I"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/sociology"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/psychology"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/283f3f09ec0f4d1f0c8713b12476a3509/dawinci"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/283f3f09ec0f4d1f0c8713b12476a3509/dawinci"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Book"/><swrc:date>Fri Jul 18 20:02:32 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>London</swrc:address><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="University of Chicago Press"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Mind, Self and Society</swrc:title><swrc:year>1934</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>ME identity I sociology psychology </swrc:keywords><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="George H. This introduces opportunities to misbehave without paying reputational consequences. A large degree of cooperation can still emerge, through a convention in which newcomers "pay their dues" by accepting poor treatment from players who have established positive reputations. One might hope for an open society where newcomers are treated well, but there is an inherent social cost in making the spread of reputations optional. We prove that no equilibrium can sustain significantly more cooperation than the dues-paying equilibrium in a repeated random matching game with a large number of players in which players have finite lives and the ability to change their identities, and there is a small but nonvanishing probability of mistakes. Although one could remove the inefficiency of mistreating newcomers by disallowing anonymity, this is not practical or desirable in a wide variety of transactions. We discuss the use of entry fees, which permits newcomers to be trusted but excludes some players with low payoffs, thus introducing a different inefficiency. We also discuss the use of free but unreplaceable pseudonyms, and describe a mechanism which implements them using standard encryption techniques, which could be practically implemented in electronic transactions.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="doi:10.1162/105864001300122476" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Eric J. The "chapter 1" of identity management is about the current paradigm, i.e., multiple, slightly integrated products and solutions for relatively static, closed and well controlled environments. It involves little integration, at the management level, with the management of other aspects such as security, privacy and trust. Current trends suggest that the digital world is going to be more and more flexible, interconnected and open. The boundaries between enterprises, organizations, societies and governments will become increasingly blurry as people play different roles in multiple activities that span across heterogeneous contexts. Identity management needs to evolve. We believe that the "chapter 2" of identity management is about adaptive identity management i.e., open, flexible, policy-driven, context-aware identity management that scales across multiple contexts and levels of abstractions and is integrated with the management of security, privacy and trust. The aim of this paper is to illustrate emerging requirements along with our vision of adaptive identity management, describe a possible high-level model for adaptive identity management and explain some of its properties.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Marco Casassa Mont"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Pate Bramhall"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Joe Prato"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

7 Laws of Identity - The Case for Privacy-Embedded Laws of Identity in the Digital Age

<dc:subject>privacy identity internet data_minimization identity_management security laws canada </dc:subject>
<span style="color:#555555;">Ann <a href="http://www.bibsonomy.org/author/Cavoukian">Cavoukian</a> </span><em>Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, </em><em>Ontaria, Canada, </em><em>October2006. </em>
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/privacy"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/identity"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/internet"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/data_minimization"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/identity_management"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/security"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/laws"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/canada"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2548fdd4a6fc38eeeb0a2c39242722186/dawinci"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2548fdd4a6fc38eeeb0a2c39242722186/dawinci"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#TechnicalReport"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.ipc.on.ca/index.asp?navid=46&fid1=470"/><swrc:date>Tue Jun 24 10:38:53 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>Ontaria, Canada</swrc:address><swrc:institution><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner"/></swrc:institution><swrc:month>October</swrc:month><swrc:title>7 Laws of Identity - The Case for Privacy-Embedded Laws of Identity in the Digital Age</swrc:title><swrc:year>2006</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>privacy identity internet data_minimization identity_management security laws canada </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Privacy is at risk in a networked world of interoperable digital identifiers. and transmit personal data within digital communication systems. The diversity
of these complex tasks that always involve security issues, is currently distributed
on many different applications and systems. Digital identity management ties
these tasks into one single concept for a system level component which can be
utilized by other communication applications. A common user interface helps with
the management of the information as well as with the transmission of personal
data to communication partners.
In contrast to organisational, identity management personal identity management
puts the user into control of his data. This influences both the system
architecture and the possible application context. Nevertheless, both share many
concepts and mechanisms which will be considered conjointly in this work.
First the fundamental concepts of digital identity management are explained,
which leads to definitions of identity, identity management and identity management
systems. Then a classification of identity management systems is introduced.
It differs from former approaches by considering the intention and thereby the
target group of the system. With it, the functional differences between organisational
and personal identity management systems become apparent. After applying
this classification to important identity management systems which are currently
developed and even deployed by commercial industry and research, it becomes
clear that there is a gap: there is no personal digital identity management system
which concentrates on self-portrayal instead of data security. This leads to this
works main goal: the development of a concept for self-portrayal oriented digital
identity management. A prototype following this concept is also introduced.
Practical examples show how the prototype is used and what difference it makes
to existing communication systems. Finally, the system is classified itself and its
position in the field is elaborated.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Tobias Baier"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Privacy and Identity Management for Everyone

<dc:subject>europe PRIME management identity privacy </dc:subject>
<span style="color:#555555;">Jan <a href="http://www.bibsonomy.org/author/Camenisch">Camenisch</a> Nobody can articulate what it means. As one commentator has observed, privacy suffers from an embarrassment of meanings. Privacy is far too vague a concept to guide adjudication and lawmaking, as abstract incantations of the importance of privacy do not fare well when pitted against more concretely-stated countervailing interests.

In 1960, the famous torts scholar William Prosser attempted to make sense of the landscape of privacy law by identifying four different interests. But Prosser focused only on tort law, and the law of information privacy is significantly more vast and complex, extending to Fourth Amendment law, the constitutional right to information privacy, evidentiary privileges, dozens of federal privacy statutes, and hundreds of state statutes. Moreover, Prosser wrote over 40 years ago, and new technologies have given rise to a panoply of new privacy harms.

A new taxonomy to understand privacy violations is thus sorely needed. This article develops a taxonomy to identify privacy problems in a comprehensive and concrete manner. It endeavors to guide the law toward a more coherent understanding of privacy and to serve as a framework for the future development of the field of privacy law.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Daniel J. Currently, the privacy protections in the United States are riddled with gaps and weak spots. Although most industrialized nations have comprehensive data protection laws, the United States has maintained a sectoral approach where certain industries are covered and others are not. In particular, emerging companies known as "commercial data brokers" have frequently slipped through the cracks of U.S. privacy law. In this article, the authors propose a Model Privacy Regime to address the problems in the privacy protection in the United States, with a particular focus on commercial data brokers. Since the United States is unlikely to shift radically from its sectoral approach to a comprehensive data protection regime, the Model Regime aims to patch up the holes in existing privacy regulation and improve and extend it. In other words, the goal of the Model Regime is to build upon the existing foundation of U.S. privacy law, not to propose an alternative foundation. The authors believe that the sectoral approach in the United States can be improved by applying the Fair Information Practices - principles that require the entities that collect personal data to extend certain rights to data subjects. The Fair Information Practices are very general principles, and they are often spoken about in a rather abstract manner. In contrast, the Model Regime demonstrates specific ways that they can be incorporated into privacy regulation in the United States. </swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Daniel J.
