At its core is the extensible messaging and presence protocol (XMPP), which defines how to stream XML content and is being used to build not only a large open IM network but also a wide range of XML applications. This article provides an overview of Jabber/XMPP protocols and technologies, as well as an introduction to XMPP-based applications.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="784501" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1109/MIC.2005.110" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="P.
