Semantic Web Applications</swrc:title><swrc:year>2003</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>Information PIM Management Web English _Diplomathesis Semantic Personal Desktop </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>The Semantic Web promises to open innumerable opportunities for
automation and information retrieval by standardizing the protocols for metadata
exchange. However, just as the success of the World Wide Web can be attributed
to the ease of use and ubiquity of Web browsers, we believe that the
unfolding of the Semantic Web vision depends on users getting powerful but
easy-to-use tools for managing their information. But unlike HTML, which can
be easily edited in any text editor, RDF is more complicated to author and does
not have an obvious presentation mechanism. Previous work has concentrated
on the ideas of generic RDF graph visualization and RDF Schema-based form
generation. In this paper, we present a comprehensive platform for constructing
end user applications that create, manipulate, and visualize arbitrary RDFencoded
information, adding another layer to the abstraction cake. We discuss a
programming environment specifically designed for manipulating RDF and introduce
user interface concepts on top that allow the developer to quickly assemble
applications that are based on RDF data models. Also, because user
interface specifications and program logic are themselves describable in RDF,
applications built upon our framework enjoy properties such as network updatability,
extensibility, and end user customizability—all desirable characteristics
in the spirit of the Semantic Web.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="430828" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dennis Quan"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="David Huynh"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="David R. A PIMO is used to represent a single users' concepts, such as projects, tasks, contacts, organizations, allowing files, e-mails, and other resources of interest to the user to be categorized. This categorization using multiple criteria was used to integrate information across different applications and file formats. Based on RDF/S, multiple layers were defined: an upper-layer for a minimal set of generic concepts, a mid-layer for refinements, and a user-layer for concepts of the individual user. Our approach was deployed and used in several research projects. The PIMO helps users to categorize resources for Personal Information Management (PIM), it is intended to be the integrative part in personalized systems, such as Social Semantic Desktops</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0948-6968" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://www.dfki.uni-kl.de/~sauermann/papers/sauermann+2007b.pdf" swrc:key="pdf"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Leo Sauermann"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ludger van Elst"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Dengel"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Tassilo Pellegrini"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Sebastian Schaffert"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Using Social Software for Personal Knowledge Management in Formal Online Learning

<dc:subject>Knowledge Learning English _Diplomathesis Personal PKM Management </dc:subject>
Maria Chiara Pettenati and Elisabetta Cigognini and Jose Mangione and Elizabeth Guerin Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education (TOJDE)July2007.
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Knowledge"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Learning"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/English"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/_Diplomathesis"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Personal"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/PKM"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/Management"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2cef0a1bc51a26f8e8376618a2e5914e6/haschek"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2cef0a1bc51a26f8e8376618a2e5914e6/haschek"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><swrc:date>Wed Jan 16 14:51:05 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education (TOJDE)</swrc:journal><swrc:month>July</swrc:month><swrc:number>3</swrc:number><swrc:title>Using Social Software for Personal Knowledge Management in Formal Online Learning</swrc:title><swrc:volume>8</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2007</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>Knowledge Learning English _Diplomathesis Personal PKM Management </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>In this paper we focus our attention on the use of social software as educational enablers for use in formal online education contexts. To this end we study the hypothesis that users have to acquire a set of important Personal Knowledge
Management (PKM) skills. Such PKM skills are presented in the paper. They are also examined in relation to current 2.0 technologies that can sustain PKM skills acquisition and development. However, the acquisition of PKM skills is not in itself sufficient to guarantee the online learner who uses social software the chance to be part of the relevant and effective online learning experience unless it is coupled with
a proper Instructional Design (ID) Model. We therefore present a possible Instructional Design Model for the Connectivist environment. Finally, we illustrate a sample scenario in which the use of social software is implemented on the basis of the ID model presented so as to support PKM skills acquisition.
