It is rich in concepts, theories, and practical developments. The present paper attempts to trace the 25 year development of programming languages by means of a sequence of 30 milestones (languages and concepts) listed in more or less historical order. The first 13 milestones (M1–M13) are largely concerned with specific programming languages of the 1950's and 1960's such as Fortran, Algol 60, Cobol, Lisp, and Snobol 4. The next ten milestones (M14–M23) relate to concepts and theories in the programming language field such as formal language theory, language definition, program verification, semantics and abstraction. The remaining milestones (M24–M30) relate to the software engineering methodology of the 1970's and include a discussion of structured programming and the life cycle concept. This discussion of programming language development is far from complete and there are both practical developments such as special purpose languages and theoretical topics such as the lambda calculus which are not adequately covered. However, it is hoped that the discussion covers the principal concepts and languages in a reasonably nontrivial way and that it captures the sense of excitement and the enormous variety of activity that was characteristic of the programming language field during its first 25 years.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0018-9340" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1109/TC.1976.1674589" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="P. on which decisions might be based are increasingly complex. There is a growing requirement for the integration of informationflows at individual and departmental levels, and across processes and organisational boundaries. Effective information managementis an important contributory factor in the efficiency of such institutions, though there are many associated problems thatdo not have obvious or simple answers. This paper discusses the problem of information gathering in complex business environmentsand considers how use cases can help to alleviate the problem using an example of a multinational organisation. Such organisationsoften require information systems that can support regional differences. However, management requires consistent and uniformrepresentation of information. The example shows that use cases can be a helpful mechanism for capturing user requirementsthat accommodate both regional properties as well as their organisational commonalties. ER -</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="R. The purpose of this paper is to identify the main goals to be reached during the RE process in order to develop a framework for RE. This framework consists of three dimensions: - - the specification dimension- - the representation dimension- - the agreement dimension. We show how this framework can be used to classify and clarify current RE research as well as RE support offered by methods and tools. In addition, the framework can be applied to the analysis of existing RE practise and the establishment of suitable process guidance. Last but not least, the framework offers a first step towards a common understanding of RE.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Klaus Pohl"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Integrating and querying distributed XML data via XLink

ScienceDirect - Information Systems : Integrating and querying distributed XML data via XLink

<dc:subject>research.xml research.db work.opas </dc:subject>
Wolfgang May and Erik Behrends and Oliver Fritzen Information Systems33(6):508--566#sep#2008.
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/research.xml"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/research.db"/><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/work.opas"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2eb8e3473ed18c97cf40e3b0c32a42427/msn"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2eb8e3473ed18c97cf40e3b0c32a42427/msn"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.is.2008.02.003"/><swrc:date>Tue Jul 01 11:59:56 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Information Systems</swrc:journal><swrc:month>#sep#</swrc:month><swrc:number>6</swrc:number><swrc:pages>508--566</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Integrating and querying distributed XML data via XLink</swrc:title><swrc:volume>33</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2008</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>research.xml research.db work.opas </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>XML instances are not necessarily self-contained but may have connections to remote XML data residing on other servers. In this paper, we show that--in spite of its minor support and use in the XML world--the XLink language provides a powerful mechanism for expressing such links both from the modeling point of view and for actually querying interlinked XML data: in our dbxlink approach, the links are not seen as explicit links (where the users must be aware of the links and traverse them explicitly in their queries), but define views that combine into a logical, transparent XML model which serves as an external schema and can be queried by XPath/XQuery. We motivate the underlying modeling and give a concise and declarative specification as an XML-to-XML mapping. We also describe the implementation of the model as an extension of the eXist [eXist: an Open Source Native XML Database, http://exist-db.org/] XML database system. Using Wegner's (1998) community of practice (COP) lens, two cases of ad hoc digital document interactions in organizations are presented and analyzed. Digital documents are found to play roles as objects of practice, reifications of practice, and boundary objects; indeed, one document may take on all of these roles. Documents-digital or otherwise-are important for accomplishing, coordinating, and learning in today's complex, knowledge-based work. COPs prove useful for studying these technologically-dependent phenomena, while their dependence on an opaque infrastructure becomes most visible when that infrastructure fails. Providing document-supportive information technology is complicated by the need to respond to a technology of practice experiencing an independent trajectory of development. Further, linkages between COPs such as boundary practices highlight the complex organizational work (digital) documents are called on to perform.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0-7695-0981-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="L.D. For anyone who designs software, this title offers some real insight into writing use cases that are clear and correct and lead to better and less costly software.
The focus of this text is on use cases that are written, as opposed to modeled in UML. This book may change your mind about the advantages of writing step-by-step descriptions of the way users (or actors) interact with systems. Besides being an exceptionally clear writer, the author has plenty to say about what works and what doesn't when it comes to creating use cases. There are several standout bits of expertise on display here, including excellent techniques for finding the right "scope" for use cases. (The book uses a color scheme in which blue indicates a sea-level use case that's just right, while higher-level use cases are white, and overly detailed ones are indigo. Cockburn also provides notational symbols to document these levels of detail within a design.)
This book contains numerous tips on the writing style for use cases and plenty of practical advice for managing projects that require a large number of use cases. One particular strength lies in the numerous actual use cases (many with impressive detail) that are borrowed from real-world projects, and demonstrate both good and bad practices. Even though the author expresses a preference for the format of use cases, he presents a variety of styles, including UML graphical versions. The explanation of how use cases fit into the rest of the software engineering process is especially good. The book concludes with several dozen concrete tips for writing better use cases.
Software engineering books often get bogged down in theory. Not so in Writing Effective Use Cases, a slender volume with a practical focus, a concise presentation style, and something truly valuable to say. This book will benefit most anyone who designs software for a living. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered:

Introduction to use cases
Requirements
Usage narratives
Actors and goals
Stakeholders
Graphical models for use cases
Scope for use cases (enterprise-level through nuts-and-bolts use cases)
Primary and supporting actors
Goal levels: user goals, summary level, and subfunctions
Preconditions, triggers, and guarantees
Main success scenarios
Extensions for describing failures

Formats for use cases (including fully dressed one- and two-column formats)
Use case templates for five common project types
Managing use cases for large projects
CRUD use cases
Business-process modeling
Missing requirements
Moving from use cases to user-interface design
Test cases
eXtreme Programming (XP) and use cases
Sample problem use cases
Tips for writing use cases
Use cases and UML diagrams

}</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="602181" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0201702258" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Alistair Cockburn"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

ProcMiner: Advancing Process Analysis and Management

<dc:subject>research.bizInt.bpm research.xml cites.dss.r research.mining out.gcp cites.pclass cites.ucot </dc:subject>
Miika Nurminen and Anne Honkaranta and Tommi Kärkkäinen Workshop on Text Data Mining and Management (TDMM), IEEE 23rd Int. This paper presents design science research that aims to improve decision support systems (DSS) development in organizations. Evolutionary development has been central to DSS theory and practice for decades, but a significant problem for DSS analysts remains how to conceptualize the improvement of a decision task during evolutionary DSS development. The objective of a DSS project is to improve the decision process and outcome for a manager making an important decision. The DSS analyst needs to have a clear idea of the nature of the target decision task and a clear strategy of how to support the decision process. Existing psychological research was examined for help with the conceptualization problem, and the theory of cognitive bias is proposed as a candidate for this assistance. A taxonomy of 37 cognitive biases that codifies a complex area of psychological research is developed. The core of the project involves the construction of a design artefact - an evolutionary DSS development methodology that uses cognitive bias theory as a focusing construct, especially in its analysis cycles. The methodology is the major contribution of the project. The feasibility and effectiveness of the development methodology are evaluated in a participatory case study of a strategic DSS project where a managing director is supported in a decision about whether to close a division of a company. </swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1111/j.1365-2575.2006.00208.x" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1365-2575.2006.00208.x" swrc:key="eprint"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="David Arnott"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></burst:publication>

Decision Support Systems and Intelligent Systems (7th Edition)

<dc:subject>cites.dss.r </dc:subject>
Efraim Turban and Jay E. Aronson and Ting-Peng Liang Prentice-Hall, Inc., (2004)
<taxo:topics><rdf:Bag><rdf:li rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/cites.dss.r"/></rdf:Bag></taxo:topics><burst:publication><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2f2e9d2f83278dc4dcb09b74c67825389/msn"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2f2e9d2f83278dc4dcb09b74c67825389/msn"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Book"/><swrc:date>Mon May 12 13:42:18 CEST 2008</swrc:date><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Prentice-Hall, Inc."/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Decision Support Systems and Intelligent Systems (7th Edition)</swrc:title><swrc:year>2004</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>cites.dss.r </swrc:keywords><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Efraim Turban"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jay E.
