JabRef-Client

JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager (see http://jabref.sourceforge.net/), which uses BibTeX as its native storage format. We have developed a customized version of JabRef which makes it a comfortable client application to access BibSonomy. The main features of this integration are so far:

  • search publications in Bibsonomy from within JabRef
  • import your own or other users' BibTeX records from BibSonomy into JabRef
  • upload your local BibTeX records from within JabRef into BibSonomy
  • delete one or more of your own BibTeX records from BibSonomy

The only prerequisite for these features is that you have access to the BibSonomy API.

System Requirements

Please refer to http://jabref.sourceforge.net/documentation.php for a detailed description of system requirements to run JabRef on your computer. With most standard Java installations, things should be OK.

Download

Go to our downloads section to obtain our customized JabRef client.

Getting started

After having downloaded JabRef, follow these steps:

  • Start JabRef:
    • double-click on the jar-file, or
    • type the following command in your command line:
      java -jar JabRef2.3b-BibsonomyEdition.jar
  • Create a new bibliography (via File> New database)or open an existing BibTeX-file (via File > Open database)
  • Enter the Bibsonomy Settings Menu (via Bibsonomy > Settings)
  • Fill out the following fields:
    • username: your Bibsonomy username
    • API key: your API key (See here how to obtain one).
    • API URL: enter http://www.bibsonomy.org/api/

And save your settings by clicking on OK.

  • Now you can e.g. search and fetch entries from BibSonomy via Bibsonomy > Search / fetch entries. This will open a new side panel, where you can
    • see your own or the global BibSonomy tag cloud (update tag cloud in the user or world mode)
    • search and fetch BibTeX entries by tag (via Fetch by tag) from your own (user mode) or all public (world mode) BibSonomy records

Bugs

We are currently in the Beta testing phase for both the new API and the JabRef-Client. So we would highly appreciate feedback via email (api-support (AT) bibsonomy (DOT) org). If you encounter a bug in our JabRef client, please post a bug report to our bugtracker.
