    Abstract: Many soft glassy materials such as dense colloidal suspensions, pastes, and particle gels show an universal nonlinear viscoelasticity with increasing oscillatory-strain amplitude. It has been known for long time that, for fixed frequencies, the storage modulus $G'($ decreases monotonically as the strain amplitude $ increases whereas the loss modulus $G''($ has a distinct peak around $gamma approx 1$ before it decreases at larger strains. This ubiquitous behavior can be understood by noticing that the characteristic relaxation time of many glassy systems are extremely sensitive to the strain rates. Under shear flow, the structural relaxation time is roughly given by $-1= -1_0 + gamma$, where $gamma$ is the strain rate and $0$ is the relaxation time without shear. The peak of $G($ should be observed around $omega approx 1/, this means that peak is at $omega approx -1_0 + gamma approx omega. Therefore, if the frequency is fixed, the peak should appear around $gammaapprox 1$. In order to confirm this simple argument, we have generalized the standard mode coupling theory (MCT) for glassy systems to those under oscillatory shear flow. We show that the peak should be observed in the $-relaxation frequency regime and at $gammaapprox 1$. MCT predictions are compared to the measured nonlinear viscoelasticity in a dense hard sphere colloidal suspensions and we have obtained reasonable agreement.     Abstract: Densely packed deformable colloids such as foams or compressed emulsions exhibit fascinating mechanial and dynamical properties; while they consist entirely of viscous components, their macroscopic rheological behavior is elastic-like within the time scales accessible to oscillatory rheology. They show the viscoelastic behavior typical for soft glassy materials, which suggests that a slow structural relaxation process should dominate their rheology at low frequencies. Here we use a new approach to oscillatry rheology, which we term Strain-Rate Frequency Superposition (SRFS), to obtain detailed information on the structural relaxation process in this class of materials. By probing different oscillation frequencies at a constant strain rate amplitude, our approach allows us to study the dependence of slow relaxation processes on an applied strain rate. Our results indicate that strain rate acts as an effective temperature, speeding up the relaxation processes in the system to a range of frequencies where they can be directly probed. We exploit this behavior to identify key differences in the relaxation dynamics of different soft glassy materials; notably we detect a secondary relaxation process in foams that is intimately linked to the main structural relaxation, with a time scale that shows the same strain rate dependent scaling behavior. We present a simple model description that qualitatively accounts for the observed behavior.
