It allows people to easily annotate the content they publish or share with free-form keywords in order to make the content more easily browsable and discoverable by others, leading to a social component of tagging. While tagging is a lightweight, agile and evolving way to annotate content, we believe it can be efficiently combined with formal modelling schemes such as ontologies to make it more powerful and to be part of the Semantic Web as a whole.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-3-642-01172-6" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/978-3-642-01172-6_8" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="John G. Six years later (2005-2011), OpenStreetMap and Google Earth (GE) are now full-fledged, crowdsourced 'Wikipedias of the Earth' par excellence, with millions of users contributing their own layers to GE, attaching photos, videos, notes and even 3-D (three dimensional) models to locations in GE. From using Twitter in participatory sensing and bicycle-mounted sensors in pervasive environmental sensing, to creating a 100,000-sensor geo-mashup using Semantic Web technology, to the 3-D visualisation of indoor and outdoor surveillance data in real-time and the development of next-generation, collaborative natural user interfaces that will power the spatially-enabled public health and emergency situation rooms of the future, where sensor data and citizen reports can be triaged and acted upon in real-time by distributed teams of professionals, this paper offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of the overlapping domains of the Sensor Web, citizen sensing and 'human-in-the-loop sensing' in the era of the Mobile and Social Web, and the roles these domains can play in environmental and public health surveillance and crisis/disaster informatics. We provide an in-depth review of the key issues and trends in these areas, the challenges faced when reasoning and making decisions with real-time crowdsourced data (such as issues of information overload, "noise", misinformation, bias and trust), the core technologies and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards involved (Sensor Web Enablement and Open GeoSMS), as well as a few outstanding project implementation examples from around the world.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="22188675" swrc:key="pmid"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1186/1476-072X-10-67" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="M N Kamel Boulos"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="B Resch"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="D N Crowley"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="J G Breslin"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="G Sohn"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="R Burtner"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="W A Pike"/></rdf:_7><rdf:_8><swrc:Person swrc:name="E Jezierski"/></rdf:_8><rdf:_9><swrc:Person swrc:name="K Y Chuang"/></rdf:_9></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2c68df861885f82501a25b786bdb43c7c/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2c68df861885f82501a25b786bdb43c7c/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/conf/interspeech/interspeech2011.html#BreslinCGK11"/><swrc:date>Wed Dec 21 00:00:00 CET 2011</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>INTERSPEECH</swrc:booktitle><swrc:crossref>conf/interspeech/2011</swrc:crossref><swrc:pages>1085-1088</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ISCA"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Integrated Online Speaker Clustering and Adaptation.</swrc:title><swrc:year>2011</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>dblp </swrc:keywords><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Catherine Breslin"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="K. Social websites, evolving around the connections between people and their objects of interest, are encountering boundaries in the areas of information integration, dissemination, reuse, portability, searchability, automation and demanding tasks like querying. The Semantic Web is an ideal platform for interlinking and performing operations on diverse person- and object-related data available from the Social Web, and has produced a variety of approaches to overcome the boundaries being experienced in Social Web application areas. After a short overview of both the Social Web and the Semantic Web, Breslin et al. describe some popular social media and social networking applications, list their strengths and limitations, and describe some applications of Semantic Web technology to address their current shortcomings by enhancing them with semantics. Across these social websites, they demonstrate a twofold approach for interconnecting the islands that are social websites with semantic technologies, and for powering semantic applications with rich community-created content. They conclude with observations on how the application of Semantic Web technologies to the Social Web is leading towards the {"Social} Semantic Web" (sometimes also called {"Web} 3.0"), forming a network of interlinked and semantically-rich content and knowledge.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-3-642-01171-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="John Breslin"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Alexandre Passant"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Stefan Decker"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/23b767777b03aac7146fb37e2078c3829/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/23b767777b03aac7146fb37e2078c3829/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/journals/presence/presence20.html#EavesBSRS11"/><swrc:date>Wed May 25 00:00:00 CEST 2011</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Presence</swrc:journal><swrc:number>1</swrc:number><swrc:pages>62-77</swrc:pages><swrc:title>The Short-Term Effects of Real-Time Virtual Reality Feedback on Motor Learning in Dance.</swrc:title><swrc:volume>20</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2011</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>dblp </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://dx.doi.org/10.1162/pres_a_00035" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Daniel L.
