a common way to study carotid arteries. Carotid arterial
stenosis is usually caused by the formation of fatty substances
and cholesterol deposits, called plaque. This results complete
blockage of the artery; leading increased risk to stroke. In
certain cases it becomes complicated for the doctors to assess
the carotid arteries from the two-dimensional (2D) neck
magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images. In this paper
an attempt has been made for detection of carotid arteries
from 2D MRA images of neck, so as to overcome such
difficulties. Edge detection techniques and color-based
segmentation algorithm have been applied on pre-processed
2D magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images. Further
analysis has been done among edge detected and color based
segmented images. Stenosis is expected to reduce the diameter
of the vessel. The diameter can be measured from both the
vasculature extracted images. As both of the segmentation
algorithms successfully detect the carotid artery, therefore it
will help the doctors for diagnosis and serve as a step in the
prevention of stroke.

technology. While the last decade laid foundation to such promise, it also paved the way for a large number
of new techniques and systems, got many new people involved, and triggered stronger association of weakly
related fields. In this article, we survey almost 300 key theoretical and empirical contributions in the current
decade related to image retrieval and automatic image annotation, and in the process discuss the spawning of
related subfields.We also discuss significant challenges involved in the adaptation of existing image retrieval
techniques to build systems that can be useful in the real world. In retrospect of what has been achieved so
