We then contrast thesauruses and dictionaries, and present a small experiment in which we look at polysemy in relation to thesaurus structure. It has sometimes been assumed that different dictionary senses for a word that are close in meaning will be near neighbours in the thesaurus. This hypothesis is explored, using as inputs the hierarchical structure of WordNet 1. 5 and a mapping between WordNet senses and the senses of another dictionary. The experiment shows that pairs of 'lexicographicaly close' meanings are frequently found in different parts of the hierarchy. These pairs often display regular polysemic relations, i.e. they constitute systematic sense combinations that are valid for more than one word. The second experiment is an attempt to gain deeper insight into the mechanisms that underlie lexicalized regular polysemy. The hierarchical structure of WordNet is exploited to create a working definition of regular polysemy and extract regular polysemic patterns at a level of semantic generalization that allows the identification of fine-grained semantic relations between the senses of the words participating in the regular polysemic pattern}</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2011-04-28 22:28:54" swrc:key="posted-at"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="9225360" swrc:key="citeulike-article-id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://ijl.oxfordjournals.org/content/13/4/287.abstract" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-1"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/ijl/13.4.287" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-0"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://ijl.oxfordjournals.org/content/13/4/287.full.pdf" swrc:key="citeulike-linkout-2"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1093/ijl/13.4.287" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Wim Peters"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Adam Kilgarriff"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/26cba8449fb9b5f5bb8f732fa0d7a428f/baisemain"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/26cba8449fb9b5f5bb8f732fa0d7a428f/baisemain"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/ijl/13.2.107"/><swrc:date>Wed May 04 16:04:17 CEST 2011</swrc:date><swrc:journal>International Journal of Lexicography</swrc:journal><swrc:month>jun</swrc:month><swrc:number>2</swrc:number><swrc:pages>107--118</swrc:pages><swrc:title>BUSINESS MODELS FOR DICTIONARIES AND NLP</swrc:title><swrc:volume>13</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2000</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>ijl, lexicography </swrc:keywords><swrc:day>1</swrc:day><swrc:abstract>{NLP needs dictionaries, and dictionary-makers can use NLP to make better dictionaries, so there is great potential for synergy between the two activities. The information is particularly valuable for language learners, as it immediately indicates how important it is to learn a word. With the advent of large computerised language corpora, it is for the first time possible to meet the demand. Both Longman Dictionaries and Collins COBUILD decided to present frequency information explicitly in new editions of their learners' dictionaries. The paper describes how this was done at Longman, and the various issues encountered along the way. It also compares the Longman and Collins COBUILD lists.
