As social bookmarking systems are growing in popularity, search algorithms have been developed that transfer the idea of link-based rankings in the Web to a social bookmarking system's data structure. These rankings differ from traditional search engine rankings in that they incorporate the rating of users. In this study, we compare search in social bookmarking systems with traditional Web search. In the first part, we compare the user activity and behaviour in both kinds of systems, as well as the overlap of the underlying sets of URLs. In the second part, we compare graph-based and vector space rankings for social bookmarking systems with commercial search engine rankings. Our experiments are performed on data of the social bookmarking system Del.icio.us and on rankings and log data from Google, MSN, and AOL. We will show that part of the difference between the systems is due to different behaviour (e.g. the concatenation of multi-word lexems to single terms in Del.icio.us), and that real-world events may trigger similar behaviour in both kinds of systems. We will also show that a graph-based ranking approach on folksonomies yields results that are closer to the rankings of the commercial search engines than vector space retrieval, and that the correlation is high in particular for the domains that are well covered by the social bookmarking system.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-3-540-78645-0" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/978-3-540-78646-7_12" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Beate Krause"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Craig Macdonald"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Iadh Ounis"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Vassilis Plachouras"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ian Ruthven"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ryen White"/></rdf:_5></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/226e58caaf32d8d7f7bdc856d0e6d25d6/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/226e58caaf32d8d7f7bdc856d0e6d25d6/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/journals/tkdd/tkdd5.html#Gomez-RodriguezLK12"/><swrc:date>Wed Feb 08 00:00:00 CET 2012</swrc:date><swrc:journal>TKDD</swrc:journal><swrc:number>4</swrc:number><swrc:pages>21</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Inferring Networks of Diffusion and Influence.</swrc:title><swrc:volume>5</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2012</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>dblp </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/2086737.2086741" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Manuel Gomez-Rodriguez"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jure Leskovec"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Krause"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/257ebc73a59c0d2dab8e5c2288ef46ad7/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/257ebc73a59c0d2dab8e5c2288ef46ad7/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/journals/cphysics/cphysics183.html#WinkelSHAKG12"/><swrc:date>Mon Feb 06 00:00:00 CET 2012</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Computer Physics Communications</swrc:journal><swrc:number>4</swrc:number><swrc:pages>880-889</swrc:pages><swrc:title>A massively parallel, multi-disciplinary Barnes-Hut tree code for extreme-scale N-body simulations.</swrc:title><swrc:volume>183</swrc:volume><swrc:year>2012</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>dblp </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cpc.2011.12.013" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Mathias Winkel"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Robert Speck"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Helge Hübner"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Lukas Arnold"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Rolf Krause"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Paul Gibbon"/></rdf:_6></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/24273ce7e83d36044d550217602f6d224/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/24273ce7e83d36044d550217602f6d224/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/journals/mmas/mmas9.html#FackeldeyKKL11"/><swrc:date>Mon Feb 06 00:00:00 CET 2012</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Multiscale Modeling & Their large user communities and ever-growing networks of user-generated content have made them an attractive object of investigation for researchers from different disciplines like Social Network Analysis, Data Mining, Information Retrieval or Knowledge Discovery. In this paper, we summarize and extend our work on different aspects of this branch of Web 2.0 research, demonstrated and evaluated within our own social bookmark and publication sharing system BibSonomy, which is currently among the three most popular systems of its kind. We structure this presentation along the different interaction phases of a user with our system, coupling the relevant research questions of each phase with the corresponding implementation issues. This approach reveals in a systematic fashion important aspects and results of the broad bandwidth of folksonomy research like capturing of emergent semantics, spam detection, ranking algorithms, analogies to search engine log data, personalized tag recommendations and information extraction techniques. We conclude that when integrating a real-life application like BibSonomy into research, certain constraints have to be considered; but in general, the tight interplay between our scientific work and the running system has made BibSonomy a valuable platform for demonstrating and evaluating Web 2.0 research.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1066-8888" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/s00778-010-0208-4" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominik Benz"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Hotho"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Robert Jäschke"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Beate Krause"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Folke Mitzlaff"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christoph Schmitz"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gerd Stumme"/></rdf:_7></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/20a2b517025afae8ced2f22d6ddc1c271/dblp"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/20a2b517025afae8ced2f22d6ddc1c271/dblp"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/journals/tac/tac56.html#KrauseRGG11"/><swrc:date>Wed Jan 18 00:00:00 CET 2012</swrc:date><swrc:journal>IEEE Trans.
