Embora a tentativa de caracterização do Porto medieval não seja uma novidade no panorama historiográfico português, entendemos contudo que a maioria dos estudos existentes mostra uma visão compartimentada dos diferentes temas e, consequentemente, limitada na sua abrangência. Exemplo disso são os vários estudos que se dedicaram ao “Porto dos bispos”, ao “Porto dos mercadores”, às “Ruas dos mesteres”, à “Judiaria”, ou à “Rua do Rei”. Contrariamente a esta visão, o presente estudo procura analisar os vários factores (naturais, económicos, políticos, pessoais, de grupo, de actividades) que se confrontaram simultaneamente, tentando perceber o crescimento urbano do Porto como resultado destas tensões.

Nesse sentido estruturámos o trabalho em quatro temas principais: um, de contextualização, denominado “Condições de Desenvolvimento”; outro, de análise, denominado “Evolução Urbana”; um terceiro, também de análise, denominado “Cidade Espontânea versus Cidade Planeada”, e um último, de investigação, com o nome de “Estratégias de Actuação Urbana”.

Assim, após uma breve introdução, segue-se o estudo das “Condições de Desenvolvimento”. Este divide-se em dois temas principais: “Condições naturais”, onde o espaço é estudado de modo a pôr em evidência os elementos naturais que, de algum modo, condicionaram a paisagem urbana do Porto medieval; e “Condições humanas”, tema que, com o mesmo objectivo de perceber a base da cidade medieval, se centra contudo no espaço construído pelo homem, do qual são exemplo sistemas de povoamento e de circulação.

A este capítulo segue-se o terceiro, denominado de ”Evolução Urbana”que, como o nome indica, tem como objectivo perceber a evolução do Porto medieval através de uma estruturação em etapas às quais corresponde um tipo dominante de crescimento urbano, equacionado em função de mecanismos político-económicos e das estruturas físicas existentes, naturais e urbanas.

O quarto Capítulo, denominado “Cidade Espontânea versus Cidade Planeada”, procura compreender em qual destes dois tipos principais de cidade medieval se encaixava o Porto, e que características partilhava com as mesmas. Esta análise permitir-nos-á, no capítulo quinto, ter as bases para o necessário entendimento do conceito de urbanismo na cidade medieval. Assim, neste último capítulo, denominado de “Estratégias de Actuação Urbana”, centrar-nos-emos na análise dos diferentes meios de actuação, gestão e planeamento da cidade, durante a baixa Idade Média, utilizando para isso instrumentos como planos, posturas e contratos de propriedade. Sabendo que estes diferentes instrumentos de controlo urbano derivavam de diferentes poderes políticos (assim como económicos e sociais), tentaremos perceber se estes grupos de poder tinham lógicas específicas e diferenciadas de actuação no espaço.
