In the earlier studies, the participants all spoke in English, raising the question of whether differences in fluency rather than differences in cultural background explained the results. We replicated the earlier studies using materials translated into Chinese, a native Chinese-speaking experimenter, and native Chinese participants. Counts of Chinese characters in each media show nearly the identical pattern found in the earlier studies, suggesting that cultural differences in communication styles, rather than fluency, account for the earlier findings. We describe implications of this work for tools to support intercultural communication.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="Vancouver, BC, Canada" swrc:key="location"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1979112" swrc:key="acmid"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-1-4503-0228-9" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="4" swrc:key="numpages"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1145/1978942.1979112" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Leslie Setlock"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Susan Fussell"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2c51b28f764c780a028fc4a740e078e02/jil"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2c51b28f764c780a028fc4a740e078e02/jil"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://aclweb.org/anthology-new/P/P11/P11-1140.pdf"/><swrc:date>Tue Sep 13 15:29:23 CEST 2011</swrc:date><swrc:address>Portland, OR</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>Proceedings of the 49th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies (ACL-11)</swrc:booktitle><swrc:title>Language-independent compound splitting with morphological operations</swrc:title><swrc:year>2011</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>bilingual compound corpus detection machine mt smt splitting translation </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Translating compounds is an important problem in machine translation. Since many compounds have not been observed during training, they pose a challenge for translation systems. Previous decompounding methods have often been restricted to a small set of languages as they cannot deal with more complex compound forming processes. We present a novel and unsupervised method to learn the compound parts and morphological operations needed to split compounds into their compound parts. The method uses a bilingual corpus to learn the morphological operations required to split a compound into its parts. Furthermore, monolingual corpora are used to learn and filter the set of compound part candidates. We evaluate our method within a machine translation task and show significant improvements for various languages to show the versatility of the approach.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Klaus Macherey"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andrew Dai"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="David Talbot"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Ashok Popat"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Franz Och"/></rdf:_5></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/25c655d098b936a8c005fc6d1f11286e7/jimregan"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/25c655d098b936a8c005fc6d1f11286e7/jimregan"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://hdl.handle.net/10609/5650"/><swrc:date>Sat May 14 01:25:55 CEST 2011</swrc:date><swrc:address>Barcelona, Spain</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Free/Open-Source Rule-Based Machine Translation</swrc:booktitle><swrc:month>January</swrc:month><swrc:number>2nd</swrc:number><swrc:pages>69--76</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Universitat Oberta de Catalunya"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Shallow-transfer rule-based machine translation for Czech to Polish</swrc:title><swrc:year>2011</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>czech mt myown polish </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>This article describes the development of an Open Source shallow-transfer machine translation system from Czech to Polish in the Apertium platform.
