Factor analysis indicates that project profitability and cooperation were the factors most responsible for the variance of early warning signals. On the other hand, checklists and ratios were the most used methods to organize early warning signals. The difference in the use of early warning signals depended on the company's R&D effort and the project size. There was also a dependent relationship between the use of early warning signals and the critical importance of success factors for R&D projects. Also, project teams are temporary and a lot of learning may be lost when they disband. This study concentrates on communities, which are informal and semi-formal groups of people bound together by shared interests. In project organizations, they require certain degree of formality. Communities are viewed as connecting and enhancing knowledge sharing mechanisms in and within projects. Communities can help to connect peers working in various projects with each other. This paper describes the characteristics of eight communities in three project organizations.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Inkeri Ruuska"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Matti Vartiainen"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/270c8d73ee53a659fe70285abe28e0393/aschmidt"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/270c8d73ee53a659fe70285abe28e0393/aschmidt"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><swrc:date>Sun Feb 18 19:59:17 CET 2007</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>CoopIS/DOA/ODBASE (1)</swrc:booktitle><swrc:crossref>DBLP:conf/coopis/2004-1</swrc:crossref><swrc:pages>705-723</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Springer"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:series>Lecture Notes in Computer Science</swrc:series><swrc:title>Intelligent Retrieval of Digital Resources by Exploiting Their Semantic
