For these semantic desktop initiatives to succeed, we need to consider how people organise their work and use their desktop. If we do not consider this existing work, the semantic desktop might very well suffer from the low adoption rate that is visible in other personal information management solutions [32]. The contribution of this paper is not technical, but presents an overview of relevant semantic desktop literature from the personal information management and human-computer interaction domains. We extract six practical lessons: focus on the individual, forget rigid classifications, follow the links, remember the context, value the power of paper, and keep it simple.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1042589" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Eyal Oren"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Stefan Decker"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Jack Park"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Leo Sauermann"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="S\&#034;{o}ren Auer"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Siegfried Handschuh"/></rdf:_5></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/22c55e91025d166f9502f4992c32e3052/taspel"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/22c55e91025d166f9502f4992c32e3052/taspel"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InCollection"/><swrc:date>Mon Feb 25 22:37:03 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>Semantic Web. An empirical analysis accomplished in the research area of rapid prototyping has unveiled that due to the high variability and unpredictability of scientific work processes, state-of-the-art business process-oriented KM approaches are not applicable and that scientific work processes need a different paradigm understanding knowledge processes as informal learning processes with a high level of social interaction. On desktop computers, semantic software has to provide stable services and has to reflect the personal view of the user. Our approach to ontologies, the Personal Information ModelPIMO allows to create tagging services like del.icio.us on the desktop. A semantic wiki allows further annotations. Continuous evaluations of the system helped to improve it. These results were created in the EPOS research project and are available in the open source projects Aperture, kaukoluwiki, and gnowsis and will be continued in the Nepomuk project. By using these components, other developers can create new desktop applications the web 2.0 way.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="0302-9743" swrc:key="issn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="978-3-540-49029-6" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/11926078_64" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Leo Sauermann"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Gunnar Aastrand Grimnes"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Malte Kiesel"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Christiaan Fluit"/></rdf:_4><rdf:_5><swrc:Person swrc:name="Heiko Maus"/></rdf:_5><rdf:_6><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominik Heim"/></rdf:_6><rdf:_7><swrc:Person swrc:name="Danish Nadeem"/></rdf:_7><rdf:_8><swrc:Person swrc:name="Benjamin Horak"/></rdf:_8><rdf:_9><swrc:Person swrc:name="Andreas Dengel"/></rdf:_9></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><foaf:Group rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/tag/semantic_desktop"><foaf:name>semantic_desktop</foaf:name><description>Community for tag(s) semantic_desktop</description></foaf:Group></rdf:RDF>
