The effectiveness of different disambiguation techniques in Wikipedia varies; for example, disambiguation of historical rulers is rather effective (George I of Great Britain), while disambiguation of other persons is problematic (John Taylor). We survey the disambiguation techniques used in different scientific and scholarly domains and in different types of reference works, and classify disambiguation techniques for use in Web-based applications such as wikis. Implications for Semantic Wiki projects are discussed. Genealogy wikis are presented as a case study; these are wikis with a potentially very large size and high needs for disambiguation due to the large numbers of people sharing similar names. We conclude that proper disambiguation is essential for the success of a large wiki, but is hard to realize without intelligent tool support.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2160134" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="No paper or slides yet." swrc:key="comment"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Chris L{\"u}er"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/27794d8b60e7f35ab762ce0af8908b491/brightbyte"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/27794d8b60e7f35ab762ce0af8908b491/brightbyte"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#Article"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.ec-gis.org/Workshops/10ec-gis/papers/25june\_nogueras.pdf"/><swrc:date>Sun Feb 10 02:19:38 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>10th European Commission GI\&GIS Workshop, ESDI: The State of the Art, Warsaw, Poland</swrc:journal><swrc:title>Improving multilingual catalog search services by means of multilingual thesaurus disambiguation</swrc:title><swrc:year>2004</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>disambiguation information-retrieval thesaurus </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>Multilinguality is an important aspect for the creation of public services in countries like
Spain, with four official languages (Spanish, Catalonian, Basque and Galician), and overall, if
these services are aimed for a European audience with a big number of official languages. Thus, an
initiative for creating a catalog service at the Spanish or at the European level must take into
account the necessity of supporting metadata written in a variety of languages. When a user
submits a query request to a catalog, (s)he should obtain the data resources that verify the
restriction specified by the user and with independence of the language used in the metadata
records describing these resources. Our R\&D group has developed a strategy for managing these
multilingual metadata aspects that face up the problem from three points of view: the use of
multilingual controlled lists, the use of multilingual and interrelated thesauri, and the word sense
disambiguation of large text descriptive elements. These three substrategies, integrated within a
catalog server, are being currently tested in several spatial data infrastructure projects.</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2320639" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Nogueras J. Similarity in Word Space is based on second-order co-occurrence: two tokens (or contexts) of the ambiguous word are assigned to the same sense cluster if the...</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="571701" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="3" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Hinrich Schutze"/></rdf:_1></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/27ecc8ea1d20af6171f7ab5d466a37186/brightbyte"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/27ecc8ea1d20af6171f7ab5d466a37186/brightbyte"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InCollection"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/11766247\_23"/><swrc:date>Sun Feb 10 02:19:38 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:journal>Advances in Artificial Intelligence</swrc:journal><swrc:pages>266--277</swrc:pages><swrc:title>Unsupervised Named-Entity Recognition: Generating Gazetteers and Resolving Ambiguity</swrc:title><swrc:year>2006</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>disambiguation gazetteers </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>In this paper, we propose a named-entity recognition (NER) system that addresses two major limitations frequently discussed in the field. First, the system requires no human intervention such as manually labeling training data or creating gazetteers. Second, the system can handle more than the three classical named-entity types (person, location, and organization). We describe the system’s architecture and compare its performance with a supervised system. We experimentally evaluate the system on a standard corpus, with the three classical named-entity types, and also on a new corpus, with a new named-entity type (car brands).</swrc:abstract><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1366689" swrc:key="id"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2" swrc:key="priority"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="10.1007/11766247\_23" swrc:key="doi"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="David Nadeau"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Peter Turney"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Stan Matwin"/></rdf:_3></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></rdf:RDF>
