We use latent semantic analysis to determine the similarity between a multiword expression and its constituent words, and claim that higher similarities indicate greater decomposability. We test the model over English noun-noun compounds and verb-particles, and evaluate its correlation with similarities and hyponymy values in WordNet. Based on mean hyponymy over partitions of data ranked on similarity, we furnish evidence for the calculated similarities being correlated with the semantic relational content of WordNet.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Timothy Baldwin"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Colin Bannard"/></rdf:_2><rdf:_3><swrc:Person swrc:name="Takaaki Tanaka"/></rdf:_3><rdf:_4><swrc:Person swrc:name="Dominic Widdows"/></rdf:_4></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2eaef651043a3f8d20054b905fb496330/goalscoringsuperstarhero"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2eaef651043a3f8d20054b905fb496330/goalscoringsuperstarhero"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/conf/kcap/kcap2005.html#WermterH05"/><swrc:date>Tue Mar 11 18:46:07 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>K-CAP</swrc:booktitle><swrc:crossref>conf/kcap/2005</swrc:crossref><swrc:pages>137-144</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="ACM"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Finding new terminology in very large corpora.</swrc:title><swrc:year>2005</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>extraction lpm collocation term lsm corpus </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1088622.1088648" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="1-59593-163-5" swrc:key="isbn"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2006-02-13" swrc:key="date"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Joachim Wermter"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Udo Hahn"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author><swrc:editor><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Peter Clark"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Guus Schreiber"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:editor></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2e0a4a7bf549b993e4a1fa696df0a177f/goalscoringsuperstarhero"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2e0a4a7bf549b993e4a1fa696df0a177f/goalscoringsuperstarhero"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://dblp.uni-trier.de/db/conf/naacl/naacl2005.html#WermterH05"/><swrc:date>Tue Mar 11 18:45:30 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:booktitle>HLT/EMNLP</swrc:booktitle><swrc:crossref>conf/naacl/2005</swrc:crossref><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="The Association for Computational Linguistics"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>Paradigmatic Modifiability Statistics for the Extraction of Complex Multi-Word Terms.</swrc:title><swrc:year>2005</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>lpm linguistic extraction corpus ngram term </swrc:keywords><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="http://acl.ldc.upenn.edu/H/H05/H05-1106.pdf" swrc:key="ee"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:Field swrc:value="2006-12-21" swrc:key="date"/></swrc:hasExtraField><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Joachim Wermter"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Udo Hahn"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description><rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2a10f28fcbe73d29866932710c2a80047/goalscoringsuperstarhero"><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://www.bibsonomy.org/uri/bibtex/2a10f28fcbe73d29866932710c2a80047/goalscoringsuperstarhero"/><rdf:type rdf:resource="http://swrc.ontoware.org/ontology#InProceedings"/><owl:sameAs rdf:resource="http://acl.ldc.upenn.edu/P/P06/P06-1099.pdf"/><swrc:date>Tue Mar 11 18:22:21 CET 2008</swrc:date><swrc:address>Sydney, Australia</swrc:address><swrc:booktitle>44th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics</swrc:booktitle><swrc:month>July</swrc:month><swrc:pages>785--792</swrc:pages><swrc:publisher><swrc:Organization swrc:name="Association for Computational Linguistics"/></swrc:publisher><swrc:title>You Can't Beat Frequency (Unless You Use Linguistic Knowledge) -- A Qualitative Evaluation of Association Measures for Collocation and Term Extraction</swrc:title><swrc:year>2006</swrc:year><swrc:keywords>term lsm lpm corpus extraction ngram frequency collocation </swrc:keywords><swrc:abstract>In the past years, a number of lexical association measures have been studied to help extract new scientific terminology or general-language collocations. The implicit assumption of this research was that newly designed term measures involving more sophisticated statistical criteria would outperform simple counts of cooccurrence frequencies. We here explicitly test this assumption. By way of four qualitative criteria, we show that purely statistics-based measures reveal virtually no difference compared with frequency of occurrence counts, while linguistically more informed metrics do reveal such a marked difference.</swrc:abstract><swrc:author><rdf:Seq><rdf:_1><swrc:Person swrc:name="Joachim Wermter"/></rdf:_1><rdf:_2><swrc:Person swrc:name="Udo Hahn"/></rdf:_2></rdf:Seq></swrc:author></rdf:Description></rdf:RDF>
